B8 S4 or GTR - help me make a decision....

Yes, I know, apples and oranges.....but the two cars I'm considering right now. 2010 S4 is so a good mix of everything, but can look a little "off" from some angles (wish it had the S5 front/back end). The GTR is obviously a lot more passion/excitement, trading off ease of getting my kid in the back seat, some comfort items, and another $15k or so (used).

S4s with drive-select, decent color, and s-tronic are somewhat sparse in my area, but a GTR in the 65-70k range are very rare, so I'd have to ship one here. Obvious downsides to that - probably another $1-2k plus having the wait, and not seeing the car before dropping a whole lot of money.

I have a S2000 as my other car and plan on keeping it (it's why i'm only looking for dual-clutches right now).

What do you guys think? I know it's a funny unique situation, but need some help making a decision (considering fun, looks, depreciation, up front cost, blah blah blah). I know it's largely subjective, but just want some perspective

Thanks in advance!

Had a 997 for 2 years - loved it, but looking to try something differed. Have also exhausted pretty much all BMW models as well

It's why I've narrowed it down to these two. Want a dual-clutch transmission, needs to be livable enough to drive semi-daily.

The GTR is actually a very comfortable DD. Enough rear seat room as a family car unless you have very "large" kids, but as you say only problem is the ease of getting in and out of back seat. Dual clutch is definitely livable as a DD. If the extra 15k is not a big deal for you then I say go for the GTR, as good as S4 is the GTR is always a more "special" car.

GTR would obviously win in the power department... but the Audi will be hard to beat on the interior and creature comforts... imo... Even if they aren't the fastest vehicles out there, they are ranked right up there at the top for interior design.

Do you have anything else in your garage to quench the all out SPEED thirst?

Have a S2000 in the garage which doesn't really satisfy the speed thirst. But love that shifter - can't let the car go. This is kind of funny, but I need this other car to be a more practical car. S4 is no-brains practical, but thinking the GTR is just practical enough. I have a 535i right now that - although I love the engine - is just boring to me. The S4 is definitely a step up in sport - especially with s-tronic - but I wonder if I'll be in the same boring mindset in 3 months.

The $15k is painful, but it's not a huge deal if it means not swapping a car again in 3 months. One other evaluation factor is that I get the S4 below invoice due to where I work and since I have a BMW.

Thats a tough decision! But I think it comes down to how much you'll be driving and on your lifestyle.

If you don't do a lot of driving, the GTR would be a great choice, but for daily driving, the S4 will be a lot better.

Do you care about quality or performance?
I think the GTR will be better in terms of performance, but the S4 is going to be more luxurious and superior in terms of quality.

S4 is hard to beat especially with all it's great attributes... If the car is a daily driver I wouldnt even consider the GTR...

If you will be putting hard miles on both of them it would seem that the GTR maint. bills would be a fair amount higher. Might be worth factoring in esp. if you would be at the upper limit for a payment anyways.

Thanks guys - very helpful feedback. I keep going back and forth, but looks like that local S4 just sold. Not a bad thing since I wasn't too thrilled about the color. They are rare around here though.

Have a line on a 2010 GTR that could be interesting, but shipping it sight-unseen is kind of scary. Going to call insurance tomorrow and see what the difference is - maybe that will tip the scale for me one way or the other.

Maybe I buy the S4 and then maybe add the GTR next to the S2K someday.

(BTW - been browsing the forums about carbon build-up on the S4. This issue scared me from the RS4 and I'm completely SHOCKED that it's still an issue on a next-gen car - Am i the only one that finds this completely ridiculous/unacceptable? Won't affect my decisions since I'll move this car within 1-2 years and the carbon buildup doesn't seem to bother 90% of buyers, but just thought I'd throw it out there)

I think the upkeep is isolated to people who press the car hard, but maybe I'm wrong. I've also heard from folks who put 25k miles on them with no issue. I guess it's always a gamble with high-performance machines. GTR insurance quote came in at $770 for 12 months. S4 is $686. I really thought the GTR would be much higher.

They are both good choices and can serve as Daily drivers. However, if you need a back seat, the ones in the GT-R are really for "SMALL" kids, there is 0 leg room back there. The S4 is my DD. I've always loved Audi interiors, the fit and finish is fantastic. I use the GT-R whenever I can when I don't need that 'Extra' space . I still can't believe the attention it gets whenever I'm driving it. Good luck with your choice

Is your S4 the Deep Sea Blue Metallic, or is that black? I can't quite tell from the pic... both are beautiful cars!
