Thumbs up Supercharged (done RIGHT) e39 M5. ESS VT560; Evolve Headers; Bilstein Coilovers etc..

Year: 2002
Make: BMW
Model: M5
Price: $39400
Mileage: 154500
Color: Black
Private or Dealer Listing: Private Listing
Location (State): MD
Transmission: Manual
Drivetrain: Rear Wheel Drive

This is a long ad… this is typical of me and the vehicles that I sell. I suggest you read all the way through 😊

For sale is my 2002 M5. Clean history. Clean title in my name. Currently has around 154K miles. Ownership history according to my extensive research is as follows (this is via online, through information provided, and by means of M5Board as this car’s history appears rather well documented by recent previous ownerships on the forum).
  1. Owner #1 unknown. Original purchase location – CA
  2. Owner #2 known. Purchased as CPO from Crevier BMW on 10/20/2005 by a Doctor and located in Irvine CA.
  3. Owner #3 known. Purchased 5/26/2012 by an M5Board member Threepedals. Vehicle located in Glendora, Monrovia, Los Angeles area during ownership by this party.
  4. Owner #4 known. Purchased in August of 2021 by an M5Board member Lenny.
  5. Owner #5 ME. Purchased in December of 2022.
NOTE*** CarFax shows ownership slightly differently:
  1. Owner #1 (1/6/2002) @ Crevier BMW
  2. Owner #2 (7/31/2004) @ Crevier BMW
  3. Owner #3 (2/22/2006) @ Crevier BMW
  4. Owner #4 (8/17/2010) “New Owner Reported” @ North Hollywood CA
  5. Owner #5 (6/6/2011) “New Owner Reported” @ Glendora, CA
  6. Owner #6 (2/1/2014) “New Owner Reported” @ Glendora, CA
  7. Owner #6 (2/8/2022) “New Owner Reported” @ San Diego, CA
  8. Owner #7 ME.
My analysis of the above is as follows:

1. I believe that Owner #1 had title altering events (i.e. lien/pay offs, moves, etc.) which resulted in new owners being “reported”. The reason for such is because Owner #2 purchased it according to my records as CPO and I do not believe in that time frame a CPO vehicle could have been purchased with multiple prior owners?

2. It is well documented that Threepedals owned the vehicle since 2012. Introductory post by Threepedals: https://www.m5board.com/threads/new-member-new-car-to-look-at-at-which-to-look.205922/page-2]https://www.m5board.com/threads/new-....205922/page-2 and that the vehicle was sold by him in August of 2021. For sale post is noted: https://www.m5board.com/threads/highly-modified-2002-m5-ess-bbs-evolve-carbon-black-black-sport-los-angeles.483882/page-2]https://www.m5board.com/threads/high....483882/page-2

Throughout this time frame there were many posts by Threepedals including the installation of the supercharger, etc.: https://www.m5board.com/threads/my-m5-story-for-the-past-few-months-ess-content.422906/]https://www.m5board.com/threads/my-m...ontent.422906/ Moreover, I have found some YouTube videos as well on the following page: https://www.youtube.com/@threepedals15

From the research I’ve conducted and the “stalking” I’ve done on prior ownerships – several well regarded members of the M5Board have also worked on this vehicle including TheShafro, Methaddict, Sidekickchuck. No stories, no secret squirrel content. I strongly urge you to read through the links I’ve found above and some of the other content floating around by the individuals noted and specifically Threepedals as his ownership of the vehicle is extensive and is well portrayed/documented on the forums with ongoing posts, etc.

I acquired the vehicle in December of 2022 from what I believe is the 4th owner based on all of my research (as aforementioned). This has been a bucket list car as I work my way through some of the vehicles I’ve always wanted to own while I save up for a 997.2 GT3. Prior to this I’ve had various Audi’s (RS6 included); various Porsche’s (600hp 911 GT2 tribute included and some older, hot-rodded air cooled versions); various other BMW’s. This car by far has the biggest personality of all. It is not, however, as agile as some other vehicles and that is what I miss the most. My most recent Stage 3++ S4 was significantly more “nible” but, the presence and sound of this e39 is simply unmatched.

The car spent most of its life in CA and I had it shipped from San Diego to MD in December. Since purchasing the vehicle I’ve conducted the following work:
  • New Coilovers. Bilstein B5 along with a Wiechers Sport front Strut Brace and all new suspension mounts (front and rear).
  • LED interior lighting kit.
  • Re-did the sound-deadening in each door and also rear shelf.
  • Full metered paint correction with ceramic coating.
  • New trunk lift supports, hood lift supports.
  • Various other small “projects”
  • FRESH fully refinished OEM Style 65 square wheel set up (No the BBS LM’s are no longer in my possession). Tires are 275 all around and have great thread remaining. At the time that I installed the wheels I also converted to ECS wheel studs and ECS spacers to widen the stance and allow for the front wheels to clear the new coilovers.
  • All new fluids (oil, coolant, transmission, diff, etc.) flushed/replaced. New fuel filter.
  • New OEM front control arms and a full alignment (front and rear).
  • New parking brake cables and readjustment of the parking brake shoes.
  • New passenger side front window regulator.
Notable maintenance from prior ownerships as can be noted by records as well as the threads I provide above:
  • New radiator plastic tank, coolant flush, brake fluid, helicoil repair @ 143K miles.
  • Clutch replacement @ 100K miles. I do not know the details of the clutch installed – however absolutely no slippage and feels great to the pedal.
  • Entire front end suspension overhaul (all arms, including control arms, center link, idler arm, thrust arms, etc.) @ 110K miles. This is prior to/in addition to the work I’ve recently done.
  • Full vanos refresh including cleaning of solenoids and replacement of all seals @115K miles.
  • Brakes @ 105K miles. (and refreshed by me at ~152K miles)
  • Vacuum line replacement @ 130K miles.
  • Fuel pump, filter, regulator @120K (and fuel filter once again by me at 154K miles
  • Starter (circa 2014)
  • Guibo (circa 2014)
  • Oilpan (circa 2014 after failed timesert attempt) @ approximately 75K miles.
  • Four crankshaft position sensors
  • Vapor barriers
  • Valve cover gasket replacement
  • Power steering line replacement
  • Headlight adjusters
  • Pixel repair on the main dash
Most recent owner whom I purchased the vehicle from claimed that carbon cleaning was performed along with timing chains/guides having been replaced. HOWEVER, I do not have proof of such. The vehicle does not show signs of having stretched chains/worn guides; and – I would be more than happy to have a sample of oil analyzed for a seriously interested buyer via Blackstone Laboratories for some peace of mind. Additionally – I more than welcome PPI’s conducted at your expense.

Regarding modifications:
  • ESS VT-560 supercharger with a 92MM pulley. Apparently, this was the latest rendition of the supercharger offered for this vehicle. White BOSCH injectors (380cc)
  • Speedhut Boost Gauge (LED matches interior lighting and looks factory as mounted in the fog light switch location. The fog lights were re-wired to turn on each time headlights or marker lights are turned on.
  • Sealed lower plenum (welded) along with an aluminum plenum lid and a custom CCV set up
  • Evolve headers
  • Resonated magnaflow x-pipe along with a muffler delete and Vibrant tips. Sounds exceptional and not too loud.
  • Bilstein B5 coilovers (new)
  • ECS tuning wheel studs and spacers (new)
  • Bavarian Sound Speaker upgrade throughout the vehicle. Sounds excellent.
  • BlueBus module for factory navigation head unit (note the CD changer has been removed and tossed by me…)
  • Alcantara covered steering wheel from Coby Wheels
  • Alcantara shift boot, e-brake boot, and e-brake handle
  • ZHP shift ****
  • E60 shifter with Rogue WSR
  • UUC Bushings
  • Slimmbones Front Lip
  • Hamann Style Fog Light Covers
  • Finned Rear Diffuser
  • Matte Black Kidneys
  • Euro Headlight Lenses
  • LED AE’s
  • 3500K Fogs
  • Tinted windows
  • Smoked side-turn-signals
Issues:
  • Twisted passenger seat. While it’s been repaired and allegedly sold to me with the seat repaired – it appears to be twisted (easy repair)
  • Passenger seat has a small seam coming apart near the knee support – simple fix via upholstery shop to re-tighten the thread.
  • Little cracking of paint near front driver’s side front fender (right on the lip) The fenders are rolled all around and the job was done extremely well – however, this must have been the first one to be worked on!
  • Typical e39 sunroof issues. Needs the FCP repair kit and following of the videos out there for a fix.
  • Rear quarter window shades are provided – but, they require repair. Typical e39 issue.
  • Passenger side front window regulator failed again. Have a new one on the way as we speak
  • Rear BMW roundel peeled a bit.. I wanted to get full black/carbon fiber infill ones.
  • Small crack at the bottom of the windshield. Barely noticeable… if it passed MD state inspection – it will pass any other inspection in regards to this! The crack is not spreading and is all the way near the cowl
  • If I think of anything else - - - I will add!
THIS IS A REALLY REALLY neat vehicle. I am on the fence about letting it go – BUT, I want to get back into a built B5 S4 Avant; OR perhaps try out an LS swapped e36 M3 as my next adventure. Price is “or best offer” however, I am in no rush and will enjoy my weekly trips to Cars and Coffee with the M!

A few videos... I had to let off in 3rd gear there pretty abruptly due to noticing some law enforcement activity ahead of me!

Thanks for reading

-Paul
