I did not have to disconnect any wiring either
thanks again to all !!
Regardless of what your wife told me I knew you could do it. Doesn't it feel good to be able to fix some of these problems without paying $$$$ to a Bentley shop.
Nice work. I got out even easier than you; I bought the part, then handed it to my radio install shop and when they put my Ben Hur in, they just swapped it out. Even told me I wasn't the first to ask.
The Bentley dealer quote is just ridiculous. Reminds me of someone on here who got a quote for $29,000 for an engine-out repair. My Bentley has never seen a dealer, although I need a spare key and that is my only choice. They want me to bring my title with me, I haven't gotten around to it, but if I lose my only remaining key, I think I'll regret it.
Before I "knew" you had to go to the dealer to get a key made I called a local locksmith who ordered one key and came to my house and cut the key and coded it. Try any locksmith that will accept Audi or VW keys of same vintage. I paid $450US for the key.
Hi All, this thread has been greatly informative.
Do you know if the Audi part will fit on the 2012+ Gen 2 CGT? I'm not sure if the assembly of the Gen 1 ('04-'11) is different from the Gen 2 ('12-'17); i know the shape of the steel base selector is different (more rectangular, instead of round shaped).
I'm looking at this option for my Gen 2 and want to know if this repair is possible before I invest in the complete shifter assembly unit.
TIA!
Hey. Just wondering if you managed to get the dust cover replaced on your gen2 vehicle. Mine split this morning and everything I can see online points to gen1 cars only.
Just had a friend PM me about the part number for the shifter plastic sliding part, someone else found the part number, so I can't take credit. I ordered it on Ebay and got it fairly quickly for $60 or so, I think the Bentley part is several hundred dollars, it's the same thing.
@US06GT
This is the best instructions on this gear dust cover i have come across Im doing this some time this week hopefully time permiting
I think im going to remove the Radio trim and Radio to make things lift up straight i did have a look earlier someone had tried and failed chewed up the collar on the gearstick and other bits
The issue is the two front metal clips that i feel need to popped out straight up as with the others ...I know some faff about twisting and pulling and hoping you will be lucky you might not be
So just a big thank you to @US06GT for the clear pics and Best Instructions on here without the guesing game
So how do you get the front two metal clips out can someone enlighten me ?
Edited
To get them out remove Radio surround woodwork be careful ..Plastic trim tools wedged in at the top a good steady pull to release the top two metal clips ..Quite tight as never been out ..there are four more clipsand out she pops ..
You have to lift these metal clips straight up to remove the centre gearstick console..by lifting the back they lock in even tighter ..Each to there own way though
Remove the four radio T20s screws giving yourself abit of wriggle room and viola follow @US06GT and @Johnny Hotspur GT great tips on doimg it there way
Pay close attension to the plastic clips when removing the Alloy gear bit from the plastic bit
You have two clips each side I did it by inserting a small driver into the clips on one side only and it releases easy
Good luck to all for having a go on this great forum
I found it alot easier to get it out of the way making it simple to undo electrical clips etc ..Its very tight in there said the Actress to the Bishop Uk joke
IMPORTANT TAKE NOTE ?
I lubricated the sliding bit with Krytox GPL 206 greaseto ease its operation for future use on the sliders to stop a repeat of doing it all again
NO ONE MENTIONS THIS LUBRICATION IN ALL OF THE POSTS I HAVE SEEN on here
Make sure to verify the magnet orientation as per my post #17 above. In your pic the magnet to the left of the shifter hole looks smaller the the OEM one. It may be fine but have a look.
