Continental GT consideration - 1st Gen vs 2nd Gen
Continental GT consideration - 1st Gen vs 2nd Gen
With the current used pricing still on the inflated side, I am curious as to thoughts of whether a 2nd Gen is worth a considerable price delta versus a 1st Gen.
If condition, lower mileage, service history favored a 1st Gen, what major considerations would be worth it on a 2nd Gen to justify the leap? I do know the main aspects of the 2nd Gen to me would be styling cues, the 2013 with the 8 speed (presume this is preferable, have not driven back to back), possible options to increase value. To me, condition and how it was owned/treated can trump a host of other factors.
I have found and am considering traveling out of state to view what appears to be a well cared for 2010 Series 51 (regular, not a Speed) with about 20k miles, dealer serviced and carefully owned. Since the price deltas of 2010 to 2013 seem to be still hovering around 20k on what I would consider comparable examples, apart from the known updates (Nav, some weight reduction, eventual 8 speed), is the Gen 2 that much better ?

"is the Gen 2 that much better ?"
I've got a 2013 GTC. Based on some of the problems I've had so far on a well maintained low mileage used car,
after scrolling through this excellent forum, I would have to conclude "yes." The electrical and mechanical problems
as well as the diagnosing and repairs are formidable for Gen 1 and 2, but more so with the Gen 1 from what I can see.
Just my opinion.
My main complaint is the lack of independent shops to do maintenance and repairs in my area. The markup on parts from the
dealer is criminal adding to the challenges, whether it's Gen 1 or 2. I get my own parts for the routine stuff and the independent
guys are OK with that. But I can't do that with keys, convertible top parts, etc., as I will be stuck with the local dealer.
A colleague of mine got a 2012 with around 45,000 miles recently. He had a problem with the convertible top and went to the
dealer, who replaced one part and two straps, so he got a way easy. However, the dealer runs the car through the scanner and does other
inspections/test, and proposed $24,000 of additional repairs (most of which would seem unnecessary for the moment). Caveat emptor.

You get a cup holder .A useful item for $20K
At this age buy on service history and maintenance.
Eg a 2010-2012 needs a new poly belt , tensioner bearing and alternator o rings and possibly a new radiator ( they eventually corrode ) .It’s power steering pipes too will be trash .
Theres so many gotcha s due to the complexity buying on yr which basically adds a cup holder is rather like looking down the wrong end of a telescope .
Buy a poorly maintained one , it will marr the experience.
You will be on here every week seeking fixes .

Good thoughts on these - thanks.
I will add this particular example is a coupe and I have no interest in the GTC.
As far as indy places, Houston does have enough to feel generally comfortable I would expect. Parts +/- on cost depending on what is sourced.
This particular example has been owned since 2017, received the 10 year service, new spark plugs, new engine belts - basically whatever the dealer suggested was done (private owner seems willing to keep up on suggestions). Tires relatively new (PZero, not my choice but at least normal brand). No accidents/paintwork so claimed and is likely accurate.
Not certain air suspension, bushings, control arms have been touched and presume they have not. Same with batteries from what I am hearing so that is probably one item to address.
The more I look at the Gen 2, I do like the styling more but not 20k+ more. I'd take an older example with the service instead of the jump in model without added intangibles.
Price is likely going to be 65/67 as negotiation is about done before viewing.
