When you turn the key to the right to the first position all accessories will be powered. Turning it further to the right starts the engine. Turning the key to the left crossfeeds the house battery to the the starter battery so you can start the car when the starter battery is dead, in essence giving you a jump start from the house battery. Under normal circumstances you'll rarely, if ever, use the actual key.
Sazam,
Does your car have push button start? My 2005 doesn't have the button for that and I think it was just added by the owners if they did it on their own.

Are you saying there's no Start/Stop button on the center console and you can only start the car with the key? Post a pic of your center console if you have a chance.
I just realized Sazam is possibly not in USA. It is my understanding Bentley/VW didn’t add push to start till later years. The cars can accept it with a modification since the rear of the world got it
ROW would always get the options first, 2004 - 05 had global close for USA N/A, we got push button start in 2006 models, whereas Europe got it in 2005, who knows, maybe even 2004...
Turning the ignition switch to the left does not "switch" the batteries to either one, it engages the parallel solenoid which ties both batteries together in parallel as Bruce implied with the term crossfeeds, therefore this works if either battery is low or dead, you can have a low house battery and this procedure will allow power to light up dash and allow for the starting of the engine, as the starter battery rarely goes dead, it is the house battery that is always drawn down when sitting for periods of time.
