Angry Ignition/Starter Switch Problem

Has anyone run into a problem with their ignition/starter switch. For whatever reason when I turn the key, the ignition only catches half way through the cranking process. Because of that the lights won't cut on unless I move the key back a little bit. When I take the key out of the ignition the car just beeps as if something were left on and they keyless remote won't work.

I just got the k-40 install a few weeks ago and they had to pull out the dash. Do you think this has anything to do with it?

I had mine changed out recently, you start by missing that clunk when your key is removed and then it all goes down from there.... I would suspect you'll be replacing your switch real soon. Mine wasn't giving any trouble but I replaced it before it did....

Ok... after explaining it to the dealer, they thought it was the switch as well (that would be oh... about $550:-(

Is that what not that much means????;-)

I then took it to a guy that normally works on my car (hopefully it will only be half that amount)

Huh???? No, it should be more like $150..MAX....The part is like $30 and the labor should take no more than 30 minutes. I was under warranty and the repair was done in 45 minutes....just a drive in.....I would like to know where the $550 is coming from....They didnt even have to rekey the car, the inside of the ignition is replaced....call another dealer...

Sounds like the dealer want to put in the new style lock/switch for that price. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1313

Had mine done at a dealer out-of-warranty and it was a couple hundred. Do it yourself for about $20

I just spoke with my mechanic. He told me that there was a part related to the ignition switch which cost somewhere around $150.00 that he needed to replace. This sounds about right based on what you guys mentioned.

If you guys didn't know.... I think this site is truly wonderful. I don't know what I'd do with out it. Thanks again...

You can do this yourself, I just did this about 3 weeks ago on my Boxster.. Get the part from Audi for $35, and crawl under your dash. 2 screws hold it in, unscrew, replace, rescrew, and you're done.

A minor PITA because of the location of it, but it beat the $300+ the dealer wanted.

That's outrageous for something as simple as that.

You know me... well maybe you don't but I called the mechanic and asked if he could help me to understand why his price was as much if not more than the dealership.

He went on to explain that he had to replace the entire assembly not just the ignition switch.

Does $585 sound about right for something like that??? Thanks in advance for your assistance...
