Starter battery not charging

Hi guys, just a quick one to kick off the weekend….

My starter battery doesn’t seem to be charging.

Both the starter and house batteries are brand new, proper spec Varta items, fitted about a week ago. I’ve been monitoring the voltages to chase down some electrical gremlins and I’ve noticed that the house battery charges nicely at 13.6v when idling, but the starter battery never gets above 11.9v.

I took it for a good run last night and after sitting overnight, and before any kind of activity, the house is now at 12.4v and the starter is at 11.8v.

This can’t be normal, can it? Do they not charge in parallel?

Yeah makes sense to have 2 trickle chargers seeing as they’re two completely different battery technologies. I currently have a Noco Genius 5 but was thinking of going for a Noco Genius 2x2 which is just two chargers in one case.

Doesn’t solve the problem though. VCDS shows loads of CAN bus no signal errors on various modules, along with a Battery Charger Defective Module at the end of the scan.

I’ve just finished a 3hr drive up to Mum’s (I’m a good boy like that) and whereas the car drove faultlessly, the same could not be said of the electronics; every so often, all audio and seat/mirror/wheel adjustment would just die, then come back on a few minutes later.

I’m about to go out and do another VCDS scan so I’ll post it up here later.

Very odd. Just gone to run another scan and check voltages on the batteries, now they’re BOTH charging at 13.6v as they should..?

Anyway, result if the scan is attached. Hoping someone can offer me some pointers on this, I suspect a bad battery control unit (behind the house battery) so I’ve sourced a used one, waiting for it to arrive.
