Stelvio pass... finally!
Stelvio pass... finally!
Ok, I tried driving this last May, but the pass was still closed. I was gone all summer and I recently returned, so I tried the pass again before the winter weather hits.
I left on a beautiful day in my Firebird, only to have my fuel pump fail on the Austrian border. I was stuck in a two hour jam and I think my muffler heated up the fuel tank, which caused the pump to fail (only 12K miles on it). So after hours of waiting, I finally endured a long trip home on a tow truck.
I was determined to make the pass, so I left again the next day in the Z4. There was rain in Austria, but it was nice and clear when I made it to the Italian Alps. The trip up the north side is a blast! There isn't much traffic this time of year, so I only passed a few cars going the opposite way. The bottom half of the pass isn't much different than other mountains, it's the upper half that has all the switch-backs. It's not fast, but definitely sporty and a lot of fun!
Looking up at north pass:

Finally at the top!

Looking down at the north pass:

A little break on top of the pass:

South side pass. This has several short tunnels only wide enough for one car! I'd hate to try this in the summer:

I'm glad I finally made it! I'm tempted to try it again in the Firebird, I just want to hear it echo up the valley

That's awesome! That's a nice Z4M Coupe by the way! Why on earth you'd rather take a Firebird down Stelvio Pass instead of the BMW is beyond me, but more power to you I guess. Either way, looks like an awesome trip!

It must be that road. It was in Italy/Austria area. I think it was the episode they had a Gallardo, GT3 and Aston.
Yes, the Z4 handles 10 times better than the Firebird, and that made it easier to make those turns! I've put a lot of work and effort into the Firebird though, so I still have fun driving it. The extra torque makes uphill runs pretty fun too

And yes, that is the same pass they drove on Top Gear; when I saw that episode, I knew I had to drive it! Well worth the trip if you ever get the chance.
