M-DCT vs 6 speed (m3)

I have read several threads that claim the M-DCT equiped cars are a bit faster than the 6 speed version. Is this due to shorter gears? If so, has anyone tried changing the rear end on the 6 speed cars?

Its faster due to shift speed. And no powerloss to the wheels during shifts. And of course the extra gear.

Yeah, as Jmoney said, it's the shift speed. SMG II shifts in 80 milliseconds, and DCT is even faster than SMG II.

^+1 The extra gear also allows it to stay in the power range better. The difference is not drastic so enjoy your manual and take advantage of that third pedal for more fun

I like both and they are very close in performance. I have a 6 speed sedan and my business partner has the DCT coupe. We took them out to a local track and they where pretty neck and neck.

on my e46 m3 i have smg II, it's an amazing gearbox, i love it, the shocks that are when i change the gear are amazings. and also the smg II and dct of course that are faster than the manual gearbox. from what i read on the web, smg II change the gears faster than a f360 modena.

That's the beauty of DCT. DCT keeps getting better and manual keeps getting manual.

I would trade the DCT's performance gains for the involvement of the 6-speed manual. I am already tired of the E-Gear in the Lamborghini.

You are correct.
