question for the E60 m5 gurus.
question for the E60 m5 gurus.
A good freind of mine , just got a e60 M5, and wants to doa few mods to it . im not all to familiar with what mods work and from what tuner.
as for intakes what should he do ? the K&N typhoon inatkes ? and how do you remove the charcoal canisters ??
exhuast wise, what do you recomend for a cat back ?? i looked around and seems like RPI , and eisenman race sound amazing , but also add some power ... does he have to do the x pipe also?
and lastly , as far as an ecu flash what do you guys recomend ?

Go to M5Board for detailed instructions on the charcoal filters. Adding high flow filters and RPI scoops w/ blockoff plates is best bang for the buck.
Software, there are a few... read up on M5Board. Higher rev-limit, a touch more power, much improved shifting (smg).
Exhaust, you need to remove the 1st cat in order to get gains - RPI has a quick release race-pipe so that you can swap it back and forth - it is quite expensive, but cheaper than headers. Everything else exhaust-wise is arguably only for sound.
New low-boost FI packages for stock blocks are also coming in the form of superchargers and turbos. These kits will be coming down the pipe at approximately 15-25K cost, and push approx 650 to the wheels. Search the ESS sc thread and the ASR turbo threads.

Here's a nice little DIY for the carbon filters.

As Dick Fidd mentioned, pairing up some new filters with some RPI air scoops will give a nice boost in power by itself.
The RPI exhaust is an excellent system. A gain of over 10WHP and a weight savings of 50 pounds compared to stock. It's also nice and loud when you have the full system.
Typically, the catback is only for sound so if you want to get some gains, you will have to replace a little more than that. Does your friend have a budget for the exhaust?
Here's a clip with the full system + headers.

We carry RPI so if you have any other questions, let me know.

M5board definately has more discussion on M cars than 6speed. Great source of info for the M5.
I, as well as most did the RPI scoops and the charcoal filter delete. I also did an Evosport exhaust with X pipe. Eisenamn is way loud for this car.

cool , thanks guys , whats the rpi scoops and block off plates with filters run ?
ez did you notice a good bit of difference with the inatkes and the exhaust?

red line , he doesnt want to do headers or anything , so i guess section 1 x pipes and the mufflers ? he likes the high pitch ferrari sounding exhaust, his choices were the eisenman race , or the rpi ,
his brother has a sl 63 amg with full exhuast headers back , and i think an ecu tune , he wants to spank him on a high way roll.

Get the RPI catback GT exhaust. I have this along with the scoops and block off plates. its a beast on the highway. Motorcycles are surprised by how fast it accelerates on the highway.
Do not overlook components from ASR Engineering.
They offer a full exhaust, from headers back eliminating the secondary cats (sect. 1,2 & 3). Truly makes hp.
ASR also makes true cold air intakes.

IMO the E60 M5 with CF removed, an ASR tune, ASR CAI's and the full ASR exhaust will yield dyno proven rwhp gains. I would also recommend a pulley (RPI, Evosport, Rogue or Dinan).
As others have said, go to M5Board.com for plenty of info. Your friend can search ASR Engineering for videos and track results.
ASR is nearing completion of my M5. A fully built V10 TT S85 engine. It will be a first and anticipating big power.
Congrats over M5 and good luck with the mods. Above all have fun modding.

The thing about the scoops and filters is that it is cheap enough that it should be done because in theory it all makes sense. Do I really notice the difference? I did the scoops, carbon filter removal and did the BMG filters and probably felt it a little. When I added the exhaust, is when I really feel the car breathing easier. On the top end above 80 mph, you really notice the difference.

I would recommend starting with the GT exhaust, air scoops and block-off plates. He'll definitely notice an increase in power and he can assess if he needs more from here.
take a look at the RacePrecision website. Great quality parts that perform.
