M5 owners questions.
M5 owners questions.
I was wondering if there was anything to look for on a 2006 m5? Are they reliable cars? any issues?
Ive owned a solid e46 M3, e63 650 and a 745 in the past. The only one that had any real issues was the BMW 745.
I'd like to pick up one soon. any one can help me find some info on the 2006-7 models and what to look for?
should i make sure i find a 3rd party warranty also?
thanks!

My wife has a '06 M5. NO issues so far (knock on wood). The best sports sedan made ever imo. The main issue I've hear about them are SMG related issues with the early model builds on the '06 model. Other than that, the gas MPG is an issue if you commute alot. I've heard guy averagin anywhere between 8 MPG to 18 MPG combined on city & freeway. Between my wife & I- the dash computer reads that we average 16.6 MPG. Not bad for a V10 sedan that handles and accelerates great! lol
We are actually thinking about selling the M5 to pick up a 997 GT3. However, we also just recently purchased a 5 year extended warranty so we are torn on keeping it or selling it.

I have an 08 with no issues until 2 days ago when my SMG went out. It is at the dealer now getting the transmission replaced...under warranty. My car has only 22,000 miles.
My ownership experience has been excellent. I love the car. It is a very well rounded vehicle that can hang with sports cars but has all the luxury and bells and whistles of your 7.
I don't know what your budget is, but I would recommend looking for an 08 or newer. There was an interior change and the lights are different as well. If you still looking for an 06, maybe an extended warranty might come in handy. There does seem to be issues with the SMG.
Oh, the only 2 gripes I have with the car is that it goes through oil rather quickly and the oil is not cheap. The other thing is that it only holds 17 gallons of fuel and with my lead foot, I only get 10 MPG if I'm lucky. You do the math.
Also, check out M5board.com. I think you'll find more info and M5 related threads over there.
@M*Hershey, Can't you get the remaining portion of your extended warranty refunded back to you if you sell the car? That has been my experience in the past.

SMG is horrible, and is hated by a lot of BMW owners across the globe. Other than that, the poeple I have talked to/know who own M5's love them.........one of the best all around saloons on the road!!
SMG tranny is a little wierd geting used to it.
i bought my m3 with one and the first week i thought i made a big mistake.
after i got used to it, i will never have anothe BMW without it if the SMG is an option.

I agree - 08 M5 with SMG - bought used in February and after the first day was ready to sell it. SMG was bouncing me all over the place. But after driving now for about 2,000 miles, I've got the hang of it - never use D and I'm more comfortable using the stick for shifts than the paddles.

I picked up a CPO '06 with a BMW warranty until 2012 with only 27K miles on it. I could not be happier with my purchase. The price I paid for a car that stickered for $95K amazes me every day.
SMG in auto sucks. So I shift with the paddles and my family doesn't feel anything. Fantastic car, super fast. I get more oogles in this car than my race prepped 911.

any mods on the indy red? im thinking about an indy red myself!
finding the cpo m5 is really hard to find. ill look into a 3rd party warranty if i have too.
I agree on the SMG..I think a lot of the bad press comes from people who test drive the car and do not take the time get get it 'figured' out. I know this was the case with me. Now the SMG is second nature and I really love how it shifts w/o having to use a clutch - especially in city traffic.
People often complained about the i-Drive - to me if you can work a mouse you will have no issue with the i-Drive.
I think the 06-07 models that are selling for $38-$45K are rather difficult to beat in terms of bang for the buck. These things sold new for $90 to $100K. I do recommend a aftermarket warranty because if the SMG does go out it is not inexpensive.
Make sure you check out the different options, there are about 6 or 7 factory options - the full leather with the alcantara headliner was a 'must have' for me. I also really like the perforated seats with the cooling option. I live in AZ.

Smg Trans in the E60 is the ONLY way to have that car.. The COMPLETE loss of performance going 6speed makes the car as interesting as watching paint dry..
They are very reliable, the motor sounds like NO OTHER, and they are beautifully built..

EZmoney is on the dot. The '08's have the newer more upto date options. Since you are buying preowned- I suggest stretching for the "newest" E60 out there in terms of year model.
And yes, you are correct I am able to get a pro rated refund of our extended warranty in case we sell the car.
good luck on your search

I have had my M5 for a little over a year now. Mo major issues, knock on wood but I should look into the extended warranty after hearing all these SMG issues. My smg hydraulic pump was replaced at 12,000 miles before I bought the car.
