545i/550i/645i SMG

Does anyone own or have experience with the SMG 545i/550i/645i? I am looking at picking one up, but am undecided about SMG vs. Auto. The dealer is trying to talk me out of SMG since it has the slower shift map.

6 spd is not an option since there are days that I spend 5 hours in traffic round trip.

I just picked up a 2005 545, I test drove all three, 6sp., Steptronic, and SMG. No way for the 6 speed, huge throw distance (compared to my 2002 996 sith short shift kit of course), SMG was really clunky, so only other option was the step, and so far so good. It has normal driving mode, sport shift, and tiptronic. Best of all three worlds, and best way to go in my mind, good luck!!!

I'm not too happy with my SMG 645, I think I would have preferred a manual.

SMG's downside is it's not smooth and you have to drive it hard to make it shift smoother. Other than that, I don't think I'd consider auto. For hauling people or a relaxed ride that is smooth, auto is the way. If you like sprited driving once in a while, SMG is the one.

6 speed is of course a good choice. However, BMW don't make the best manual shifter.

For resell, SMG is ideal, then 6spd, then auto.

I ended up getting the 550i Step. I was not really excited about the SMG and stick was not an option for my daily driver.
