M5 2000-2003.. reliability, price?
I am considering a E39 is it? M5
how is the reliability on these cars? what is a good price to pay for a 60k-70k mileage car.
would i be taking a bit hit in depreciation if i can find one for around 25 and keep it for a year or 2?
hard to resell vs the M3 which pretty much goes for the same price?
any pros or cons vs the M3
thanks !!

The E39 M5 is a great car. Very reliable, just like it's little brother M3.
The depreciation hit on a M5 at a price point in the mid 20k range would be minimal. I would look at 01+ models and see if any have the BMW CPO warranty.

26-28k would be what you are looking to pay for a 2000 M5 with those miles. 2000 have some carbon buildup issues, it is best to purchase a 01+ model with the refined piston ring designs. Hell for 26-28k who cares about depreciation really. M5 = 4 Doors and you can bring all your friends with you and thrill them all at once.

I was looking to buy a 2000 M5 with really low miles(30k miles) here as 3rd and daily drive car...and I better wait for an newer version
Thanks again!

01+ cars also had some other minor upgrades. Larger navi screen and upgraded headlights i believe. prices on these cars have really been all over the map depending on miles and such. i have been looking for one to replace my 528 as a daily driver. Found an 03 with about 42k miles on it for $34,000. that was a good price i feel though. they are going to be anywhere from the high $20's for 2000 model years to the low $40's for the newer ones with low miles.
hope that helps.

No worries, I think it's great that she drives cars like that. She is getting the M6 now in 6speed. Before i was born she had a Porsche Turbo. She wanted something fast, almost went with a 997TT or a Gallardo, but decided she didn't want something so low, probably needed more room, and didn't want to look like if she was trying too hard to be a 20yr old again.

1)-Pixels are known to go bad .....a pretty common thing....
2)-Clutch is the weakest link in this car........what i have heard from various people is that it usually last 40,000 miles with several had it changed under original service plan.......
3)-Carbon build up in the secondary air injection system is an another issue with these cars.......usually brings the CEL on in the dash........
I can't think of other issues right now but there are few more that one needs to look into prior to buying one of these machines...........I was in the same boat looking for a 400 hp 4 door sedan and ended up buying a AA Turbocharged '98 ///M3-4 with 10K miles..the car makes over 420 at the wheels
For more info go to M5 forum .......and you will get your answers......there's a reason why a 5 year old car that originally cost more then $75,000 are now going for mid 20's..........

my '03 M5 has been great for 4 yrs now. i'm about out to run out of warranty but it's been so reliable, i don't feel the need to buy aftermarket warranty. think it'll be difficult to find 2001+ in the mid-20s. maybe a 2000 or an '01 high mileage.
There is a lot of misconception in this thread about the E39 M5.
Like it has been mentioned, model year 2001+ (through 2003) got some cosmetic upgrades (headlights & taillights, steering wheel, nav screen, etc.). The early 2000 cars had a different piston ring than the later cars, which can cause some excessive oil consumption. There is nothing wrong with these cars however.
There are a couple weak points on the maintainence and reliability of the car. The VANOS seems to go out or need some kind of replacement on quite a few cars. There is a carbon buildup issue that can occur in ANY MODEL YEAR of the M5. Fixing it very costly, however some dealers have been helping out with costs. Carbon buildup only leads to failing emissions testing, there are no adverse side effects of it performance wise. The stock clutch is a little undersized, but if you're not completely careless, it does just fine. Also, replacing brakes is costly.
When buying, carefully look over the condition of the car, check the VIN number through the BMW dealership computer for history, run a Carfax, and do a PPI inspection. Because you're buying at the lower end of the market, be careful. I wouldn't buy anything with more than 60K miles on the car. I think you can get an '01 (the cosmetic updates are nice) with 60K miles in good condition, documented, serviced, etc. for low-mid 30K range.
They are extremely fun cars, and very well made and capable. The quality and size can't be matched by its little brother, the M3. However, they are a performance car, and maintaining them correctly will take some money. If your budget is tighter, I'd look at an '01 or '02 M3, I think they are going for less and don't require as much to keep running.
