If it's true, that's garbage! Esp since the Z4 is supposedly 54 lbs lighter and 30 more horses. I don't und. Pls explain why 335i is allegedly faster. Arrgh.

Faster in a straight line, yes. Tons of torque.

Suprised they turned a faster lap time in the 335. If it makes you feel any better, that will only last about 2 laps until the 335 goes into limp mode from 300* oil temps, while the Z4M runs all day long...

Either way, I wouldn't put too much trust into mag track times....

They attributed it to a better/more composed chassis layout. This is of course the same test that says a no-IRS having Mustang GT-500 is faster then a 997 Turbo around the track. Something is skewed here, and they had 3 drivers in that test, so maybe one of them wasn't as good and he drove the cars that did poorly.

have u seen the videos that were posted in the 997 forum? a modded 335 coupe beats a 997 then the 335 got beat by a M coupe, if u're talking about straight line.

if u've driven the M coupe then u'll realized it's not a easy car to push to the edge. it required some getting-used-to. little car's got personality which i think 335 is a lot easier to drive fast.

Well said.

This has been discussed on other Z4 forums and people all agree, the C&D test was a bunch of bunk.

The M Coupe is much more than 50some pounds lighter (it is closer to 300lbs, unless the 335 had very few options even then it is pushing it).

It is also noted in the Z4M community that the S54 needs a few thousand miles (even past the break in period) to get broken in and start producing all the power.

The article also complained about the M Coupe understeering. That statement is also completely idiotic and shows how the drivers don't know how to drive with a style to fit the different cars. You can't drive each car the same way.

Trust me, I have driven the 335 coupe and it's a wonderful car, much better car than the M Coupe if you wanted a daily driver. But as Spencer said, it wouldn't last long if you wanted to track it. The M Coupe is far superior if that is what you wanted (and more fun).

For a more in depth read on my review comparing the 335i to the E46 M3 click here:

I attribute their results, like others, to their inability to drive the M Coupe properly. The 335i is the one with the understeer in my experience, but that is easily dialed out with coilvers, sways and a good corner balance.

I wouldn't be as quick to dismiss the 335 at the track as some have been, however. I've tracked mine (A++ will do again!!!) and it held up quite well, temps never went above normal operating levels.

Well, whichever is actually faster, I hate it that both cars are so close in performance. Doesn't seem right that a dedicated sportscar (Z4) needs to worry about a DD breathing down its neck from the same manufacturer.

With the AMG 63/65's and M5's out there... your screwed no matter what if you're really worried about DDs breathing your neck!

Anyway, despite the close performance numbers, one drive in the MZ4 and 3-series, and you'll know which is right for you. Numbers are only a part of the equation...
