Buying a used Cayman FAQ...

Hi,
My search has finally come to an end, and I have found something that is right for me, largely due to the help and advice provided by all of you...thanks again.
Anyways, if all goes as planned I will have a 2007 cayman s with 20000km parked in my driveway; but too be honest, I know nothing about buying used, and less about used Porsche's...essentially, I need your help on some basics please.
This car has 20 inch Avus AF-M02 rims with Michelin PS2; I haven't asked the owner about the tread wear, as the price is not final yet. so my question is, at this mileage do you think the tires have high wear, and how much are they too replace, the rims are 20's as far as i know.
Also, the car is porsche certified, and coming from a dealer, but being certified has nothing to do with the extended warranty does it?
Also, how often does the clutch need to be replaced with regular wear?

And basically, what do you guys think are key things to do/know/check before buying a used cayman s...obviously it will be properly inspected.

thanks again
i posted a few pics for fun

How much are they asking for this Car? do not worry about the clutch if it checks out fine ,certified means a BIG difference !! it has to pass a very strick inspection including clutch and I believe it includes a extended warrenty but check with the dealer .Certified takes the risk out of buying used thats why it was created .Its to be as good as new so this car should sell for the low to mid 40's depending on options up to 45K 42K certified would be a great deal in my opinion ,,

Hello Niqui,
That is a nice color combination, you should not have any problems if the car is dealer certified, in the US the warranties are good for 40K or four years (transferable), not sure about Canada.
IMHO the only draw back are the 20" wheels (don't take me wrong, they are beautiful but the tires ARE be expensive..) However, you can always sell them and get a 19" or 18" set which will be much more comfortable ride as well, Good luck!

hi
thanks a lot gilles and porschpet...
in terms of price, you are spot on, asking 48k...i am going to try and beat him down (he keeps trying to read me the options list lpus extra work, it has full leather, sports seats, everything under the sun, except nav), but we will see, i should know by the end of the week, if we agree. plus other things, as there are some upgrades, like exhaust and spacers and all that, but since i am in canada, by the time i get it here it will run me about 60k. i cant find one this loaded or my colors locally for love or money, even a nicely equipped one, would be well into the 70's i think.
so i take it porsche certified, makes it a much safer buy, i was worried because porsche, unlike the brands i am use to, you pay for all your own services, etc...
i am also worried about those rims, considering i plan on running winter tires as well, i am going to check with the dealer, i highly doubt it comes with the stock ones, but maybe i could exchange them with him, for a pair of turbo rims? or would you guys just keep them? is the only issue with these rims going to be tire costs and ride right? does anybody know how often these tires need to be changed> i have yet to see them in person, any idea on tire costs?

just a dumb amateur question, how could i damage the clutch on this car? as i dont know much about driving stick daily, in traffic, etc. i drive stick once a year, for fun, and dont want to blow my clutch straight away.
i checked, Porsche certified includes a limited warranty/extension.
thanks a lot

If you have to ask how much 20" tires cost, you probably can't afford them.

yup, its starting to scare me, as so many ppl have told me to worry about the tires on this car, especially porsches, as supposedly they wear quicker under normal use?

i am curious of a rough ball park price, just so i dont get the shock of my life every 2 years plus winter tires.

i know the ones on my current cars, generally range from 300-750 each tire depending on the car.

get a PPI before buying it. Pre Purchase Inspection from a Porsche Dealership or certified mechanic. I have those same wheels, tires will start at around $300+ each.

hi, how are the wheels...is it a very harsh ride?
thanks,
yes car will get ppi'd before.
small question, for you guys, guess its a matter of opinion.
the dealer wont go below 46k, asking 48k...says 46k usd is the lowest and thats it.
at 46 k usd, by the time i have the car, taxes, fees, and all inspections, cost will be at just under 67k canadian...i had forgotten a tax (which i thought this was exempt from...anyways)

as for the tires, the 4 ps2's are brand new with 500 miles on them.
so what do you guys think?
i will post a full options list soon,
thanks

honestly the ride is not that harsh at all. I had 19's before I picked these up and I don't notice a difference in quality of the ride at all. Then again I don't expect my 997 to ride like a Bentley. I think if you're going from 18's to 20's then you'll notice a change but I love them.

P.S.- pics do the wheels no justice, they look good in the pics, but GREAT in person.
