Torn CV Boot Help

I have both inner CV boots starting to tear and throw grease. Just curious if this is something that should be handled by the dealer or if any old mechanic can take care of. Also, I've had experience with the outer boots tearing but not the inner ones, which seem a little more labor intensive. Has anyone experienced this issue and if so, how did you handle it? What price range should I expect to pay at either a dealer or a shop? Thanks,

-Mike

It's a 2002 base Boxster with 33k miles. I've taken it autocrossing three times in the recent past, so I dont know if that had an effect.

Any mechanic should be able to handle this job, its even a DIY. Just make sure you get all new hardware for the re-install, don't use the old bolts & washers.

This job is definitely possible as a DIY. I did it on my '01 Boxster S. There's pretty detailed instructions on www.pedrosgarage.com (http://www.pedrosgarage.com/Site_3/R...alf_Axles.html) is the specific page you'd need.

If you decide that you don't want to DIY, getting it done on both sides will be in the $800-$900 range. As noted, replace everything, the parts are very cheap, most of the cost is the labor.

do you guys think that the CV wear is a result of just the number of years on the car? he certainly doesn't have that many miles on it.

The wear is a little surprising on a base model Boxster. But if left to sit for a long period of time the grease becomes solid and rubber of those boots becomes brittle. My car is a 2001 and only had 23k on it in 2007 when I bought it. I then put about 10k on in a little less than two years and all 4 of mine cracked on my Boxster S. However, the joint angles are more severe on the Boxster S because the 6-speed transaxle is different than the 5 speed of the base model that the chassis was designed for. Boot kits are relatively cheap as far as parts. I'd go ahead and try to get them replaced to keep dirt from getting in there and grease from getting out. If you wait too long and the actual bearing material gets damaged you'll have to replace the whole joint, which is much more expensive.
