Full caliper rebuild/refinish
Full caliper rebuild/refinish
Been going through the entire suspension and refreshing parts. The final part are the brakes. The car has 104k on it and don't know if they've ever been inspected. I figured it was a good time to do new seals and refresh their appearance. So far, I have the fronts all torn apart and blasted. I took special care not to blast the piston bores as they are anodized. I also plan to tape off the section of caliper where the backing plate sits up against when I powder coat. See below for pictures of the progress. I'll update this thread as the calipers are coated and finished with new decals. Thanks guys

interesting read. i had a set of amg calipers powder coated and the guy dang near ruined them. swore never again. but i have a set of 997 turbo calipers in red i would love to have done in speed yellow to match my car. sub'd to see how this works out
Subd as well! When I tear the front clip apart for upgrades I would love to pc mine. I did the whole repaint process and they went from bright red to dang near black after a couple short drives!!
yet ANOTHER must do for me if we see any rain! this year to give me the few days downtime needed for calipers off/paint/decals.
mine are faded reddish/pink from track duty, and rears are GONE lol. no paint/decals left at all

It is very easy to destroy a set of calipers if the person is rushed or just doesn't know what they're doing. I've powdercoated dozens of calipers and never had a problem (even on BMWCCA race cars). A lot of people will go crazy with blasting and coating. The most common problem I see is laying down a thick coat of powder all around the piston bores. This makes reassembly with the dust boots a real issue. To reduce the blasting time, I use HD paint/coating stripper which removed 90% of the previous finish. After that, they get blasted with 90 grit garnet sand which is not as harsh as aluminum oxide and provides a perfect profile for the powder. All the holes/ports/bleed holes are plugged for this step. The piston bores are protected with multiple layers of duct tape. After the blasting and blow off of compressed air, the plugs/duct tape are removed and they get a rinse in an acetone bath for several minutes/cycles. The calipers are left to dry and are ready for masking and prep before laying down the powder. Should have the powder tomorrow and will keep this thread updated. As of now, I have the front 2 calipers stripped and blasted.
yep they actually blasted the piston bores since i sent them without the pistons as i was replacing them. they then p/c the bores !! no way the pistons would go in and they had to be chemically stripped to clean the bores. cost me a small fortune. post finished pics i would love yellow calipers
I was able to spend some time in the garage and got the remaining calipers stripped/blasted and cleaned. Also put them in the oven at 450 for around 30 mins to "gas out". I will hit them with denatured alcohol and out gas one more time before masking and spraying the powder. Also picked up some powder today. I got mirror red, porsche yellow, argento (metallic grey) and mirror clear.

^ is this something you undertake as a sideline? and if so, would you take on any outside work? sure looks as if you're doing it "right".

I would like to refinish my calipers this winter.
jared can you shoot me a sample panel in speed yellow? when you get time no rush. i want to see how close it matches. when i did my rollbar the p/c had some tn predators gold that was almost a perfect match. until i went outside! then it was darker. lucky for me its inside the car under the window tint and barely noticeable
this project is way to cool for cars with led taillights!
