Spyder weighs less (2811 lbs. vs. 2976 lbs.), has the exact same engine as the Cayman S, but electronically has a lower track speed (166 vs. the 172 on the Cayman S).

But will the Boxster have more chassis flex due to no roof?

hard to tell at this point, but the lack of weight in the boxster would likely give it the edge. i would say it is a drivers race! now when our box spyder gets a turbo on it...

Track: Boxster Spyder
AutoX: Boxster Spyder

The weight difference is substantial, the top speed limit (166mph Spyder, 170 mph Boxster, 172 mph Cayman S) is due to drag, but those speeds are not seen in racetracks here in U.S. with that kind of power, unless you run a full Nascar oval.

The suspension in the Spyder is lower and stiffer than the Cayman S PASM.

I hope Porsche brings us a Cayman S with A/C delete, aluminum doors, radio delete, fixed aero, lightweight wheels and lightweight interior.

And this would have WHAT to do with track speed? As the other poster said, top speed rarely has anything to do with most road coarses driven by club drivers.

On tracks with much in the way of twisties, I give the major edge to the Spyder due to the significantly lower weight. Weight is the enemy of speed, especially when handling is introduced.

Relax... I was just posting stats from the Porsche site... I never said the Cayman S would be faster. I've had a deposit down for the Boxster Spyder since they officially released it (Nov 5th). Currently #2 at my dealer... oh and I'll be front and center for the press debut in LA in 11 days!.

Exclamation

i do think the boxster spyder is one of the best looking porsches yet, but i just couldn't handle that roof or no door handles. if i could get one that has the regular boxster s roof, and door handles, i'd buy it in a heart beat.

You obviously do not understand the purpose of this model. The Boxster S is still around and that is the model you all desire. The Spyder is a hardcore, raw sports car based on what is only needed. Basically a 987 version of a 911 GT3 RS for the masses. Yes it's not for everyone, but remember neither is the GT3 RS. Oh BTW, you don't like it, don't buy it

firstly.... you don't like my comments...don't reply.
the original thread asked for our opinions.

that being said... the 'raw' version on this Boxster S is not that much of a power jump. +10hp bump? wow... :~(

I will say though...the improved rear end is killer. I love the shape, vents, lines, etc...awesome!

But really.... no door handles, no auto top, only 320hp other than weight..not much seperation between Boxster S and same hp Cayman S - 0 - 60 in 4.8sec!!? my '08 S is rated at 5.0..so, really not that impressive. Maybe if there was a significant bump in hp..then your talking....

Manual top, although unusual will probably be a pain over time.
No inner door handles, a/c, uncomfortable seats? side body stickers...

yes...its lightweight, nice looking, huh....what else?

other than that...you could option your less expensive boxster S just the same.... and have just as much fun...

LOL... sorry but the OP wasn't about what you thought about the Spyder... It asked which has more track potential between the Spyder and Cayman... and the answer is the Spyder. You proved my point... you aren't the Spyder consumer, you are the Boxster S consumer. HP isn't everything... and I as you have a right to voice my opinion.

its a start

I love the look of the new spyder but i think porsche just likes giving us a taste of what the 987 can do. they should have been able to cut much more weight then they did. power is good but i just think they are trying too hard to protect the 911.

Im guessing it would be better than the cayman with a lower Cg and lower weight, porsche claims 7 seconds quicker around the ring then the boxster S. thats huge.

is the speed 166 because it is limited? or because of the lower air pressures the spyder runs and no top? boxster s tops out at 170. I cant imagine that they would electronically limit the car 4 mph slower than the S.
btw gear ratios are identical.
