From looking at MY09 3.4 engine, camshaft is driven at front of the engine but MY07 engine has timing chain at the back of the engine. I cannot see IMS in 09 picture. Does this mean no more IMS problem in 09 engine? Does 09 engine still has RMS problem?

 

No IMS or RMS... 40% less moving parts... Big step for porsche.

 

A much better design, but now it has a "vibration damper". Wonder why that is? My 07 Cayman has a tad bit of vibration around 2.2k, maybe this engine was bad enough to add the damper. Maybe they changed the flywheel too?

Also noticed they got rid of the single bolt on the pulley, have heard some reports of the old one coming loose when replaced with LWP.

 

Any reports on the 09 CS having high pressure fuel pump issues?

Now that the 2 biggest issues are solved with the new DFI engine, any guesses on how reliable this new engine might be?

Does Porsche test these engines under demanding circumstances before production?

I am afraid that solving the old issues and redesigning the engine may give way to different issues.

Product design is about compromise...and reality is no engine is perfect (tho, some could argue Hondas are pretty much bullet proof, but I digress) and only time will tell how new enhancements will pan out. Just like I'm sure BMW mgt thought the engine tolerance was acceptable when they launched the E46 M3, until the market told them it was "unfavorable" with engine failures.
Like life, enjoy it to the fullest with every opportunity.
