Test drive - Used 986 S - bad synchro?
Test drive - Used 986 S - bad synchro?
I took a 2000 Boxster S for a spin at a Toyota dealer today. Had some really weird problems where it just didn't go into 2nd gear ... twice it just ground a little bit even tho my clutch was into the floor, and once it popped out and I revved up to 5K before getting it back in.
From what I can tell this might be a known issue with some old Boxster S's? I've never messed up shifting into 2nd gear so many times in my life so I felt kind of weird. I've only been driving stick for several months, but three problem shifts in one short driving session is an new record.
Also, the shifting felt a little mushy compared to my 997 ... I guess that's more like a standard car, but definitely not as heavy and clicky as I'm used to.
I would also add the price was unusually low for a Boxster S so that's perhaps another indicator this car wasn't in great shape .... 72K miles, only 11.5K.

Most manual trannys are somewhat stiff when the gear oil is stone cold. They loosen up after a few miles. There is a difference between gear change stiffness and grinding, worn out synchros.
A thrashed 2nd gear synchro is pretty common on any car subjected to stoplight racing or exuberant "fast and furious" gear change jamming. Thrashed synchro usually means new tranny. Keep looking. Lots of Boxsters in that price range that have been well cared for. Get a PPI and carfax on any car you would consider owning to weed out potential expensive problems.

Just went through this. Failing 2nd gear syncho. Figure about $3,000 to rebuild plus labor & shipping of another $800 - $1,000. Several places like GBOX that really do a great job with these.
While it is true that shifting can be a bit touchy into second gear when the tranny is cold normally, you should not get that kind of grinding. Also for others that may be experiencing a mild case of this, changing the gear oil makes a world of difference especially on a higher mileage car that may not have had this done in a while.
Other than this issue, I have never had a problem with mine and it has 84,000 of the funnest miles. I've tracked & autocrossed it and its been very reliable over the years.
