Hey,

After owning a plethora of cars I've finally arrived at what I've always wanted - a Porsche. Initially, like many uneducated people I did not consider the Boxster at all. After owning two S2000s I really wanted a 911. All I could easily afford would be a 996 C2. I decided to drive an 03 986S and fell in love. I picked up my 2002 986S with 32k miles last Friday. Though I swore I would not mod it I'm looking at a few different exhaust options to make it sound like what a Porsche, in my mind, should.

The two I'm considering are:

Borla - Lots of information and some sound clips available for these, I'm not worried about drone as I never drive with the top up

or

FVD Brombacher listed at http://www.fvd.de/us/en/Porsche-0/Bo...2C-2x90mm.html . They have a clip of a similar one on a Cayman S and it sounds spectacular. Anyone have any clips or feedback of this exhaust on a 986S?

Congrats on the new ride - looks to be an excellent example! Plenty of options for exhaust - from raspy to throaty. Do a search on youtube, but try to find other enthusiasts locally who can let you hear the sound in person. Enjoy!

I was leaning in the same direction as you were, OP, but after driving a couple boxsters, especially an S and spyder, I was convinced that the boxster was the way to go for me, as well. With any luck, I'll be joining you as soon as I get home.

Congratulations on your new ride , you made a wise choice , mods are great I cant stop, if you want my opinion, dont just do the exhaust but also the cold air intake. I vote for Borla exhaust and I went through the same exhausting search as you are embarking on , there are a lot of good sounding systems out there but I can vouch for Borla, the best example I have is actually from a DE at sebring that I taped from inside the car and if you have good speakers it sounds exacatly like it as on the video
the other sample i have was from my license plate but the sound is not exactly right, keep in mind that I also have headers and no cats good luck BTW the best mod I made was the DME upgrade just awsome power

Thanks for posting your videos. I actually have watched your plate cam video multiple times on youtube as it seems like a good representation of sound.

I do want it more aggressive than quiet and it seems like the Borla will fit the bill for that.. Does it sound deep throughout the rev range or does it get high pitched up top? Also, on the plate cam vid I can hear some burbling / pops when you get off the throttle - can you hear these inside the car? I am a big fan of this particular sound.

Anyway, any feedback you have will be great - have you tried / heard any other systems?

yes you can hear the burbling and popping not quite as loud but remember these are produced because there are no cats
yes the sound is throughout the rpm range but when you just drive normally you cant hear it at all which is also good
as I mentioned before the other utube is a better representation of what you will hear in the car , however I let a friend of mine drive at the AX and it sounds even better than in the car - cant explain it but it sounds *****in - everytime i go to AX or DE I always get lots of comments on how great my car sounds, thats the real confirmation for me. - and I hate to admit it, but the sound becomes addictive, I actually will jump in the car and drive around " the block" radio off, just to hear it, I'm not kidding

I had a Fabspeed exhaust on my 996 and loved it.

 

The new BORLA Cat-Back system for the Porsche 986S not only sounds great, but it also cuts the weight of the stock exhaust system, adding to a better balance for those winding highways these cars love. It also flows an impressive 263cfm more air than stock, which accounts for the added performance. The burble will be present when you use a higher flow system. My Remus matted with high flow cat has the burble sound, as with my fiancee's Audi A3 with the Miltek cat-back. You can also "control" the burble by feathering the throttle - when you're cruising and let off the throttle lightly, you'll hear it. Again, more pronounced on in the high flow system. I was following a 987S with Borla (factory cat) and you can hear the sound as well - not very loud, but you hear it.

Here is a video of my setup @ Blue Ridge Boxster Summit. Lower speed/RPM in the first 3 minutes - listen for the burble. You'll hear the higher pitch @ about 3min mark as I followed the GT3RS/C4S through the mountain.

Setup: 987S with Fabspeed headers/cats + Remus exhaust. Again, most high flow system on the market will give you the burble sound. Now, if I can get flames to shoot out the tailpipes, then we're cooking!

 

Have seen your vid before ( nice car, by the way) yours sounds slightly different but also good, Mine is more pronounced when its cold but once its totally up to temp its almost not noticable
