Thinking about picking up a Cayman S ... need some input

Hey guys ... been on here a lot but never really looked into the Cayman a whole lot. I was thinking about picking up a used Cayman S and was wondering a couple of things.

1)Are there big model changes during any of the years (for example in 2008 ______ happened)

2) I saw a listing for a Cayman S Sport ... but really havnt seen any other listing with this. Did the seller make the "sport" up or is there really such a model?

3) Any must have options?

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

1.Yes 2006 to 2008 is known as the gen 1 ,2009 and up are gen 2. Both have the Same Size motor but Gen 2 have DFI, slightly different tail lights ,different outside mirrors ,Increased HP by 15 HP ,different rear diffueser ,Refined and adressed the oil sump issues if you track your car ,and the new PDK for the S model only as well as In the 2009 model, an LSD is available as an option!

Yes there is a legitamate Cayman S Sport ,

Porsche also announced the production of a limited edition Cayman S Sport, to be available in October 2008 as a 2009 model.[9] It features a freer-flowing, louder, exhaust, which raises power from (295 PS (217 kW) at 6250 rpm to (303 PS (223 kW) at an identical 6250 rpm. The Cayman S Sport comes in Bright Orange and Signal Green (from the Porsche 911 GT3 RS), as well as Carrera White, Speed Yellow, Guards Red, Black and Arctic Silver. The Cayman S has striping on the sides, black 19-inch wheels and an Alcantara steering wheel directly from the 911 GT3 RS. The instrumentation loses its hood. The body is lowered by 1 cm. 700 were to be made for the worldwide market.

Must have options IMO are PASM -LSD -Sport Chrono -Better throttle response
2.Xenon Lights ,Bose (or upgrade yourself) keep it simple and reduce weight .every pound makes a difference on these cars
You will find the Cayman is not as luxerious as the BMW
They are for the Passionate car drivers who like the Handeling ,The sound of the motor and the feeling they are driving a true race car .
It is a pure drivers car made for just 1 person that Loves to Drive and wishes they raced cars for a living or will someday .
You can take this car to the track out of the box and thrill yourself with excitement that is a oportunity and memory of a lifetime.

This is my first Pcar and I have no desires to EVER drive anything else

Hope this helps ,Good Luck

What is recommended the PDK or Manuel in the car. I have never had a PDK or Dul Clutch but I drove my Father's M6 SMG and loved it. Was considering going DCT on the BMW if I went that wrought.

The PDK has a faster 0 to 60 time , but I think if you like to drive the 6 speed is more fun .if you do a lot of FWY driving then PDK . I myself would never get anything but a manual shift ,how else can i do burn outs
Its whatever you prefer

Um, no, generation 1 and 2 cars do not have the same motor. Gen 2 cars have direct injection and are completely different.

I also have a 2008 M3 and its a great car, but drives much larger and heavier. They are completely different. I would say if you get full leather in the cayman, the interiors are both richly appointed. However, there is a lot more room in the M.

Space isnt a issue for me. Im looking for fun to drive factor. Of the two which is more fun to drive in your opinion?

I've test driven base Cayman's in both MT and PDK as well as an '08 M3 DCT recently. The M3 is a beast, very powerful and handles much better than my 335i. The Cayman is in a different league as far as handling goes IMO. Even in base form the Cayman was much more fun to drive. I'm going to get an '09 or '10 CPO Cayman-S with PDK when I turn in my BMW this summer.

If you can afford the 2nd generation then what karrera4 makes it worth reaching for . I have heard nothing but great things about the Gen 2 Cars
so 6speed Manual lightly optioned 2009 and up car would do the trick .

Thanks for correcting me Karrera4 my bad they have the same size motor @ 3.4 but the DFI on 2009 and up

Yeah, the S has the same displacement between gen 1 and 2; however, the base went from 2.7 to 2.9.

As far as fun to drive factor: The Cayman is a lot more "fun" to drive. I have modded mine, so its a blast. The M3 is a great all-around car though in terms of power, comfort, driving pleasure. If I had to have only one car, the M3 would be hard to beat...but I dont and I wouldn't trade the Cayman in for anything!

Drive both, they are both great performers but drive totally different as Karrera4 said. The m3 is a beast; when he said the m3 drives 'heavier' that's exactly how I felt.

To me the Cayman S feels more alive at all times, whereas the m3 seems to taunt you to drive it hard to illegal speeds.

I think if you drove both, you'd know right away which of the two is more 'you'. Either way, both great choices.

Here's my 2-cents....
PDK. really fun...really cool...really really expensive after warrenty runs out if it breaks.
6 Speed... really fun...really cool...cost about a grand to replace the clutch.
Guess which one I have? lol
If you get a 09' on up....Make sure the PCM3 is decked out with all the fun stuff, if not there are some nice sounding exhausts out there. Happy hunting....
