Cayman S, Boxster S, OR Spyder?
Cayman S, Boxster S, OR Spyder?
There is an empty space in the garage that needs to be filled. I have been looking for a Cayman S, but after seeing a Spyder at the dealership I am split. This is a weekend driver / garage queen car. Are there any problems with the Spyder's? I am only looking at the late model S cars. Any opinions out there?
The Boxster Spyder and Cayman R are the pinnacle of 987 design. Either would be an awesome weekend car or a great daily driver. Depends if you want a roof or not. Or get one of each!
It really depends on what you prefer. Do you prefer a hardtop, Cabriolet or the Spyder? You are in Louisiana where it rains a fair amount. Take each out for a drive, decide which one's physical profile you prefer (I would never buy a coupe) then decide - really think it out about the Spyder top. If you don't mind the process of donning and doffing the top, and you want a convertible, then I would get the Spyder. It's much more than "which one should I buy".

I'd say a Boxster S....way more practical (extreme heat, rain??) and only a tad slower than the spyder and usually optioned up nicely. Spyder has a tricky top which will ALWAYS be down. I know a couple of Spyder owners and they told me the novelty wore off quickly, especially here in S Florida (hot and quick daily showers)
I would also think resale....most of the country may want some degree of "practicality"
Since two of the three cars you mentioned are open air, I would say the Cayman is No3 on that short list
Your call..best of luck

Also, if you are thinking of the Spyder, why not the Cayman R instead of the S? It does have the emotional connection of the Spyder, just with a hard top.
I had a similar choice and chose the CAyman R vs. the Spyder. I was really, really tempted to go for the Spyder but it is a daily driver in frog strangler rain showers and was just afraid of the top where I had to drive in the weather regardless. As others said, if you can pick your weather, I would lean towards the Spyder.
