Boxster 3.4

The heart transplant should happen this month. Out with the old (986 2.5L motor), in with the new (996 3.4L rebuild with IMS/RMS and many other upgrades).

Please share experiences with either LA Dismantler or Vision Motorsports in Laguna. I've narrowed the search to these two suppliers.

Grazie.

I bet your getting a tad bit excited. I haven't heard anything about Vision, but have heard good stuff about LA.

Since you ask, bad experience with LA [and an acquaintance whom I had warned].

I have done a couple of deals through Vision with good results. In fact, he was 100% stand up on an issue over a turbocharger.

So.. Vision YES
LA.. I will never deal with again.

Parts from LA D appear overpriced IMO. Precision Porsche is more reasonable but haven't bought a motor from them.

Does the DME in your Boxster have the ability to control Variocam? Do you need an updated fuel pump for returnless fueling? Is your tb manual or drive-by-wire? There may be a few things your installer hasn't considered depending on your boxster year.

Will likely need to reflash the ECU (thoughts?)

Both motors are drive-by-wire, not e-drive, which is what prompted me to stay in the same MY

Not sure about the fuel pump, but a Cayman S MAF/housing/etc will be installed

Vision offered to harvest all they can from the 2.5 to make it as seamless as possible

Vision Motorsports is known for their excellence on other sites. No personal affiliation and I've never bought anything from them.

I've also heard that they have M97 motors on the shelf.

Doing a 3.8 requires too many changes to your car, including replacing your ECU. That makes it very expensive....speaking from experience. I would only trust a shop that has done the upgrade. Ask for a reference.

My $.02

Agreed, Dave. Sticking with the 3.4L to minimize complications...and expense.

Ya think standard 986 brakes can handle 996 power? I think the 986S and 996 used the same size rotors/pads...
