I rarely drive it anymore as I have a 3 series as a daily driver, nowhere near as much fun but more practical in a sense of boot/cabin space

Its only now that i learn not driving it is actually hurting it, I should take it out for a run more often, still has the original set of tires on it which has got to tell you something lol, i'll be sure to smoke them up nicely before getting a new set
You are practically in the clear You could crawl under there and see if there are any drops at all. If not, stop worrying. 28K and 6 years should be long enough for an RMS to drip. Now, go out and drive it! Mine is an '00 S (no RMS leak), and I take it everywhere: work, hardware store, grocery store, etc. The front "boot" holds quite a lot of groceries. Also, regularly running the car keeps oil on the seals, etc., and keeps things from drying out or corroding.

Even the Turbos and GT3s have had RMS leaks. Worst case, you wait until you need a clutch and then get it replaced for a few extra bucks. Not the end of the world. I would imagine that almost all of the ones with any serious oil leaks have already been found by now.

Thank god lol, had a quick look then, all seems in order

True they have quite a fair bit of boot space, I was amazed I managed to squeeze $350 of grocery shopping into it, but perceptions a ***** in my business, if people see you driving a car that catchy they think your ripping them off lol + comes the issues of how many bodys you can fit in the back

I drive my '06 daily. 6k miles. Nothing wrong yet, though w/ the way I drive...someone knock on wood for me.

The most common problem w/ the 986 seems to be the RMS as mentioned above.

Intermediate Shaft Problems

The really big potential problem with the Boxter is intermediate shaft failure. From what I have heard it can happen at almost any mileage. I don't know what percentage of Boxters will eventually blow the engine. My engine blew at 42,000 miles at three years of age. Entire engine and associated pumps, etc. were replaced under warranty. Out of warranty cost would be ~$16,000. I love my Boxter S but if you are going to buy used I would get an S newer than an '03 and with a warranty. I justed added an '06 CS to the stable. While I was buying it, I talked to the service manager about Boxter engine failure. He just smiled. I had heard that they were replacing a lot of motors. Good luck..you will enjoy driving a Boxter.
