Porsche Boxster Daily Driver

Hey guys,
Looking to buy a 1999/2000/2001 porsche boxster to use as a dd - I drive ~100 miles/day...any issues/problems I should be aware off? Also, if anyone knows firsthand of clean examples available (I am already checking ebay / local dealerships) the heads-up would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
d

My wife used to drive an 01 for a while. No problems there. Check for the RMS (rear main seal) during your pre-purchase inspection.

I drive mine daily, rain or snow... no problems in two and half years... knock knock knock RMS is the biggest problem... if you are going to drive in the winter then I STRONGLY suggest a hart-top...

Same here, my 99 is a daily driver, and has seen it all.. No complaints at all!

No problem as a daily driver. You might want to be cautions of ones with TOO LOW of a mileage. Some 1999 engines had some engine block problems, but if they have say 30K miles, any problems should have surfaced and you should be in the clear.

i had a 2001 boxster S and had 2 RMS fail. after the second it was time to get out of it. on the other hand, my brother has a 1999 boxster and has only had regular maintenance issues while he continues to drive it over 100k miles.

RMS leaks are not specific to the date of manufacture. Chronic RMS has to do with a bore concentric to the block problem. It's sort of either a you have it or you don't have it problem. If the car has not had RMS leaks/repairs in the past, and has some reasonable mileage on it, then likely no problem. If a car has had multiple RMS repairs, then the block is likely defective. RMS leaks are also not a catastrophic type of failure. A lot of cars leak. It's just with this one, it can leak with very low miles if the seal or block is defective.

If you go on ppbb.com (the largest Boxster board on the Net), you'll see that RMS failure isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be, but it is indeed a possibility.. Even a few 2005's have had it happen, so it's not like you can avoid a specific year and be in the clear.

To Porsche's credit, in most cases I've heard of, they've stepped up to make things right, even for out-of-warranty cars.

Knock on wood, my 99 has been largely trouble-free..

Ah suppose thats not to bad then, only concern I have is my car is 6 years old this month with 28,000kms on it, from what i read you need around 60k to be in the clear.

I rarely drive it anymore as I have a 3 series as a daily driver, nowhere near as much fun but more practical in a sense of boot/cabin space

Its only now that i learn not driving it is actually hurting it, I should take it out for a run more often, still has the original set of tires on it which has got to tell you something lol, i'll be sure to smoke them up nicely before getting a new set
