Importing from USA

Question - Opinion.
'05 996TT 'S', Dallas to Toronto.
Anyone who has imported from USA.
Would you hire a transport company to deliver, handle the brokerage etc., or drive it up yourself?
I have quotes of $1350 open carrier, $2000. closed carrier.
I would enjoy the drive, probably not the border, its an extra 2300 Km on the clock.

you can note drive it home since the temporary permit you will get is not good from one state to the other.

I had the car delivered to the border and did the papers myself, otherwise, hire someone that will do job completly if you don't mind paying a little extra to save the hassle.

make sure you read a lot before importing, lot of papers and inspections to do.

you sure it is still a good move with the price drop in Canada and the dollar lower than what it was?

Its a done deal now, I just have to get it up here. I looked around the local market but could not find the combination of options I was looking for. I wanted a 996 Turbo S with tip and a cab. There might only be a couple of those in Canada.

If you fly there and go to a local registry office, you can get an OUT OF COUNTRY permit to drive it home other then a few states such as massachusettes. Those quotes do include the brokerage fee if u have talked to a transport company, because they have to deliver it across the border. Good Luck on your purchase! (mine didnt go so well)

The majority of carriers are not bonded in both Canada and the US, meaning one carrier will get it to the border and leave it for another to bring the car the rest of the way into Canada. Not like that's a big deal...

Have you called any local carriers? TFX? Thorsons?

Talk to Cole International. They'll arrange bonded drivers for a one truck enclosed (or otherwise if you want) transport right to your front door. It's not expensive at all.

My Turbo S was brought up by them.

Do we have to pay tax while buying the car in USA? If so, it wouldn't make sense then. We will be paying double taxes plus those other fees. Might as well buy in Canada?

I had mine shipped to the border from Dallas on an open carrier.
$1000. No issues. Brokered it across myself since I live close to the border crossing.

Thanks everyone, so far L. Hansen seems to have the best combination of price and knowledge. Has anyone dealt with them lately?

I just drove a car up from Austin and cleared customs myself. It wasn't too bad but if I were to do it again, I would have probably shipped it up in an enclosed container.

yup, resell value sucked for USA cars, buy low sell low....prepare to get lowballed by wholesellers/potencial buyers during resell. Plus the potencial issues with flooded cars from southern states.
