For the best look, the Cayenne's huge wheel openings need to be filled up, and so far 22" wheels with approx. 285/35/22 tires seem to look best.

The only thing wrong with the 22" look IMO is the low profile tires, which (IMO) just don't look right on big SUV's. Also IMO, aftermarket wheels in general just don't look right on any Porsche (although I have seen some 22's on Cayennes that look damn good).

So why not use a slightly wider, higher profile tire with the stock 20" wheels? This would result in an overall tire diameter similar to the usual 22's, which would improve the looks, and the taller sidewalls would improve the ride, reduce road noise, and look appropriate on the vehicle (my opinion again).

285/50/20 is way too tall, 8.2% diameter difference. The closest to stock is 295/30/22 which is 1.04% difference. 285/35/22 is 3.99% difference which also is to far away. I got these numbers using the tire calculator from 1010tires.com.

 

I looked at the tire rack's spec info for various tires, and found that the 285/35/22's that people are using have an overall diameter of around 31-32", depending on brand. There are tires for 20's with similar overall diameters.

The question is, has anyone done this? If so, photos, impressions?

Also, why is 285/50/20 too tall? Would it physically not fit?

 

The rolling diameter is too tall therefore making your speedometer too slow. Not to mention that it might have an effect on the drivetrain. So to answer your question, I highly doubt anyone has done it. Why don't you be the first and let us know?

 

It sounds like your saying that you don't think its a good idea because the overall diameter would be larger than stock. Correct me if that's wrong.

If that's the case, then I guess the 22's that people are using have overall diameters that are similar to stock? That could be my misunderstanding, because I thought the 22's tires were larger overall.

275/45/20 = 29.8"

 

Stock size is 275/40/20=28.66"
285/50/20=31.22"=8.2% difference in diameter
295/30/22=28.96"=1.04% difference in diameter
285/35/22=29.85" =3.99% difference in diameter

This is according to 1010tires.com tire calculator. When you plug in the numbers, a warning comes up that says:

"Warning!! When changing tire sizes, we recommend staying within 3% of the diameter of the original tire. Anymore than this and you risk brake failure"

If you want more of a sidewall ie: 50, you would have to go down in rim size to maybe 18". Just trying to help a brotha out........

Taller sidewalls aren't the only thing I was suggesting, it was bigger overall diameters to fill up the wheel openings and improve the looks, but without using 22's and lower profile tires.

This is done all the time with other cars/trucks, but I'm not going to pretend to know if it'll work on a Cayenne or not. Thus the question, has anyone done it?

bringing back an old topic. i've just got through the whole myriad of problems the 955 cayenne goes through. first it was the driveshaft, then the coilpack, then my rearlid shock went out, and most recently my coolant pipe. the car runs great (for now) and have always wanted to go with the larger tire look. if i upgraded my brakes, would the 285/50/20's work?
