v6 brake upgrade
v6 brake upgrade
Hi, i drive 06 cayenne v6, i have 22 inch wheels on it,
and the brake feels very week, since v6 has smaller front brakes.
If possible, i want to change my front rotors, pads, and calipers to a bigger size, CS, or CTTs. Does anyone know about this, or has done this?
thanks,

The issue is that the 22" wheels & tires are going to be significantly heavier than the OEM wheels. The OEM brakes are no longer up to the task of slowing that much rotating mass, even at common speeds. The feeling that he is getting right now is that the car just feels like it doesn't want to stop the same way as it previously did. This feeling becomes exaggerated even more through multiple/repeated stops as the OEM sized rotors can not efficiently absorb and dissipate the additional heat created with the increased work loads.
Since the wheels of a car are both unsprung and rotational weight, every actual pound of weight added down there can be factored as 7 times that.
If a single wheel & tire weighs 20lbs more than stock (which is probably a modest estimate when going from the OEM 17's or 18's to 22"s) that is a total of 80lbs for all 4 wheels. Multiply that by 7 to get the increased rotational weight, and you have a situation where the car is trying to stop the equivalent to 560 additional pounds over the vehicles original gross weight.
While better brake lines, high performance pads, and good brake fluid can improve the braking feel of the OEM system it is simply not enough to restore the amount of braking performance he has lost with all of the added weight. The benefits of a BBK would be hugely beneficial at this point.
The Brembo system actually starts with a combination of larger 2pc. fully floating discs and a properly selected caliper to restore, and even improve upon, the amount of available brake torque in order to adequately handle the additional load of the 22" wheels & tires. The increased size of the brake rotor itself allows for much more heat capacity which ensures that this improvement will last through multiple stops and greatly reduces any chance of fade. The 2pc. discs also reduce a decent amount of unsprung and rotational weight to effectively lighten the work load at the same time. Stainless steel brake lines and high performance pads are also standard with the Gran Turismo brake kits.
Keep in mind that the Brembo system we are talking about is also an improvement beyond what comes standard on the Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo. While those are great systems on their own, you will leap from the performance that these systems offer, and more than likely do so at a very similar cost to sourcing those parts through the Porsche dealership.
