20k oil changes, not!

I went to a local oil change shop close to my house, and luckily for me, they service Cayennes...my last oil change was when I got the 40k mile service and now my CTT has 51k...I got the low oil light and decided to just do an early oil change...to my surprise, there was some serious sludge build-up and the oil was very very black...I drive my CTT hard but after seeing how bad the condition of the oil was, I'm having a real hard time beleiving that anyone should wait 20k before servicing their Cayenne...I got the change plus had them flush out the system to make sure all the sludge was removed.

I also went with 5w40 instead of 0w40...my CTT seems to drive considerably better now than it did before (especially when idling). Has anyone else experienced similar conditions??

I had the dealer change my oil at around 18K miles (for the first time). I was not around to see the work, so I don't know if there was sludge. However, after getting the car back, I too noticed the car drives considerably better. It seems more responsive generally, and even feels quicker.

so you changed it at 11k mi and there's sludge?

was last oil change done at a reputable shop or dealer?

you went to an oil change place for your CTT? I'd not recommend it. In fact, I'd not trust what they tell you. oil change places don't have real mechanics.

i change the oil every 5K - 6K miles. it's cheap insurance to make sure everything is lubricated with clean oil. of course i change the oil myself so it's not as expensive as the dealership.

even at 6K miles the oil is dark enough you can't see through it. can't imagine what 10K+ would look like.

The interesting item is the change from 0W-40 to 5W-40... I wonder what the long term damage could be???

right. i have a hard enough time finding the 0w40 oil.

i also use an additive, E.O.S. Assembly Lubricant from GM. my mechanic (Tony Callas) swears by it saying it replaces what the EPA makes the oil companies take out. something about pitting and worn cams?

ggmr: do you use the additive only when you change the oil?

yes, 4 ounces with every oil change (1/4 of a bottle). here's one of the sources:

http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results...number=1052367

i have used mobil 1 for years, every 3K-4K miles on my older 911's. had my 993TT checked out last year and they found pitted cams. said it was a direct result of this additive NOT being in the new oils being produced.

There won't be any damage done to the truck by going with 5w40 instead of 0w40...plus the summer is starting soon and having slightly thicker oil can't hurt.

I got my last oil change done at the dealer and they never mentioned anything about sludge...the place I got the oil change done at now, does a lot of Cayennes (they even stock Porsche oil filters)...I saw the sludge and general condition of the oil myself when they did the work...I just think Porsche is crazy to tell people to change it every 20k miles...6-8k miles is what it should be...I don't know the CS does with the oil but CTTs really burn it up fast.

side note - I am still only using Mobile 1...just gonna try out 5w40 this time around...so far I'm happy with it.

I agree with you that 20K is too long, but synthetic oil should be good for more than 8K. Somewhere in between should be fine.

Racer_65, I'm at about the middle of a scheduled oil change now...well a little more since it's been 11k miles...but Porsche did my last change and the condition was just terrible...maybe it's because my Cayenne has over 50k miles now? All vehiles tend to burn oil faster as they age right? I think 7500 mile changes will be my intervals from now on.

That's what they told me too. The salesman say they changed it for the 08

i was informed by my mechanic that the EPA is behind this 10K/20K oil change regiment. makes sense since that would be less waste oil. synthetic oil is made to last longer but if the condition of oil after 10K miles is any indication, i sure don't want to wait that long.

i still change about every 5K to 6K miles. i also thought it would be easy to just change the filter after 4K to 5K miles and leave the oil. the new porsches make filter changes simple.
