Using lower grade gas

With the recent surge in gas price, as anyone thought about using a lower grade gas? Will it do any harm to the Cayenne?

Any input is appreciated...

If you fill up a 20 gallon tank once a week and the difference btwn premium and regular unleaded is .30/gallon, you would save ~$312/year (all #'s are guesstimates). A better question is why would you risk it?

Thought about it, sure, but haven't done it.
Supposadly the Cayenne has a anti knocking system that even if you do put the lower grade gas in it, it should be fine, engine wise.....
It may however lower the performance, but that won't harm the car.

But when all that is said, I still haven't put cheaper gas in my GTS, and probably won't.

guys i just got my cayenne a week ago. going broke gassing it up!!!
i wouldn't dare put cheap gas in it.

quick question: most of the stations around Calgary are 91 octane. i think there are a few which are higher but they are a PITA to find/rare. Those ones have 94 i think. is 91 octane to low for a CTT?

what is everyone putting in thier CTT?

thx

91 is fine.

91 at 5,000 ft, here in Colorado, is the SAME as 93 at sea level.

Because of the altitude they have different numbers.
91 at higher altitude will do the exact same no more/no less than 93 at sea level.

doesn't all gas, especially in winter, have some level of ethanol in it?
I thought it did.

With the new engines/technology with Anti-Knocking you won't harm the motor. The ratings of HP is delivered on the 91 Octane rating since some states don't have 93. So if you degrade the octane you won't kill the motor and I don't think you will feel the difference between the octane ratings personally. Generally when you retard the timing for knocking due to lower than recommended fuel is that you lose HP. How much I am not sure.

But as Chuck said the total cost of savings over a period of time is not that much. That is why Hybrids in the past with the extra cost wasn't enough over a 5 year period to recoupe the cost of the Hybrid motor. Especially in the SUV's.

I laughed when I saw threads like this back when I was an Audi owner.

To see it in a Porsche forum blows my mind.
If you can't afford gas now trade in and get a mini cooper or a Ford Hybrid SUV.

And to add to this....
Say you use 100 gallons per month. If gas goes up 2 dollars at most over 1 year you are looking at 2400 dollars a year.

If you can't afford that you are driving the wrong car.

I agree, if you have a Porsche, then there is no gas for you that has is than 93 octane. The strange thing is, in Turkey, lowest grade fuel is 97 octane, and they are selling 100 octane fuel at gas stations.

With gas prices skyrocketing I feel your concern but i wouldnt put anything lower then 91 in my porsche. maybe u should get a civic or kia as a daily driver and save the cayenne. Im thinking about selling my CS but i dont know if anyone wants it..

All the gas in my area has 10% Ethanol, and it has no effect on mine or any one else's Cayenne from V6 to CTT-S.
91 is the minimum octane, 93 is what I put in mine, no matter what. The difference in cost from 91 to 93 is pennies. If gas prices are killing you (financially or philosophically), you shouldn't use the Cayenne as a daily driver.
My Audi uses premium, my Porsche uses premium, and My Harley uses premium. I too have a philosophical issue with the rapid rise in oil prices, and the gauging started by Exxon/Mobil, so now I drive the Harley to work everyday and am enjoying 50+ mpg and the free feeling of the bike.
This summer I'll be driving the Cayenne across country on a trip to see family as I do every summer, but I knew I had to buy premium when I bought it, and if I was having financial issues because of the mpg I wouldn't talk about it, I'd sell it.
