$75K car= Means it is ok to be raped by vendors?

With all this exhaust talk, I am ready to go... but where? Very few reviews, very few examples... So it is tough. I think PaulW's idea is great spend $600 and get basically the fabspeed Cat Back. (I already have the FS Cat bypass pipes) So today I am looking into the idea of replicating Pauls setup, Use the polished magniflow mufflers and have a "good" exhaust shop do the custom work. I did some research and find Magniflow is here in Orange county, Excellent!!! I thought I could call and talk to a sales person there and they would point me in the right direction to a well recommended shop in the area. Sure enough the guy says I get all my work done by Kevin at "forget the name, it's written down in my office" He does excellent work and you will be very happy. I call Kevin he is kind of a cocky guy, I tell him I have a Porsche Cayenne... He stops me and says I won't touch those... They have that funny muffler... I said ok well I heard you are one of the best here in Orange county and I bet this would be a piece of cake... He tells me " how do you know it is a piece a cake? how many have you done?" I said well i haven't but I know Fabspeed uses the Magniflow muffler that you use makes a kit with for the Cayenne that is a direct fit. I also have friends that had their local muffler shops create a custom install using the Magniflow. He said well I would have to see the car I guess. He said "why don't you just buy the kit?" I tell him well they range from $2500-1500, The fabspeed runs $1600 and you basically get the setup I want you to build, so others have done it for a fraction of the cost.

He then starts to chuckle and tells me you are running around in what a $75K Porsh and you are worrying about a $2000 exhaust. He said if I take a look at your car the exhaust will be close to $2000. (The mufflers are under $100 a piece) He said I rent a $3000 office here I have bills blah blah... I can't work for free... blah blah... I am concentrated on putting together these Ford Cat back kits (You know he is breaking the bank with those!) So I said you are telling me you have $1500+ in labor? I said even if you were to charge me an astronomical rate of $100/hr that is 15 hours... this is a small job 15 hours is nuts. I then went on to tell him I guess you are just telling me It is not worth your time. Thanks for taking the call but I am going to find a different alternative.

So it's back to the drawing board. The problem that I have found with cars like Porsches over the years, you attract a-holes that want to gouge you instead of quoting you on the job. It really is not right. But it happens too often!

Eric: take it easy. Its better to get it straight from a tuner like Techart, CG, Gemballa, or Fabspeed. There is too much work involved in making just one muffler or catback, unless you order 20

That's just it Deetz these exhausts don't have that much work involved in them. they are quite simple. I am with Paul on this topic his exhaust turned out looking good.

As for the sounds of the different exhausts I really want to hear the Techart. The Gemballa and Cargraphic sound good too. I like the look of the PaulW, Fab speed and Techart.

In the end I will end up buying a tunner exhaust... It still does not mean it is ok to price gouge.

I am totally with Paul too for saving $$$. Maybe should ask paul's shop to make another exact same thing and ship it to you sandoval. It might be possible.

Some people out there thought that if someone own $75K worth of car, $2k is not money for them. They tends to think that way. But $100 is a lot to me. maybe its just me. 6 pieces of that $100 can get me a FAB speed bypass.

I have the Cat Bypass too. but I was not that impressed. I am thinking the Cat back and bypass combo is the ticket.

Eric: if you do Techart exhaust + Bypass pipes it will be very very noisy and loud. I heard Fabspeed exhaust has resonance? is it true?

Loud is good! Like RobynC I love to hear my car when I drive. The Cayenne is so well insulated I can not beleive anything will be too loud! My 996 was very loud too but I loved it.

I received an email from Joe at Fabspeed he had some interesting things to say. I can't really say much because it is his place to make announcements of this nature. But From what he said I recommend all of you guys wanting to get an exhaust, and you are on the fence hold off for a month. He has some good things coming for us.

Deetz It clearly states on their website that their exhaust has no Resonance. They were also the first Tunner to release an information on a Cayenne Exhaust.

Another point on the Cat Bypass offered by Fabspeed is not that it creates a louder tone but that it adds 16+HP to the CS.

Actually, $2000 for an exhaust is not bad, as long as the quality is there.

I don't think I would use Magnaflow for a Cayenne S, since it is naturally aspirated. I would go with a specifically tuned exhaust like the TechArt... at least you know it was tuned for the engine with the proper backpressure characteristics?

Besides, imagine how some of us feel, having to spend $5000 for a 996 Turbo exhaust!

the Techart is not 2K...it is almost double. Not worth IMHO... What do you mean by tuned exhaust? these are mufflers, they are not as elaborate and compact as the TT systems. if you look at the Techart it apears to be the same muffler design as the Fabspeed. (Magniflow) I would love to see the tuning and R&D on the CS exhaust I would bet it was very little. As long as they don't decrease the HP their is no harm. All of these exhasusts reduce backpressure. high flow...

Eric (Sandoval) - give JP Performance a try for your custom exhaust, they're local in SoCal and I've had a good experience with them. Ask for Jose. Here's their site - let him know that Albert sent ya!

also, Mikes Muffler in El Monte does great work. It's a ghetto little shop but they are flawless. Mandrel bending and all. Great rates. I'd give them a call, if I'm not mistaken they are a magnaflow dealer too. But call a head because they don't carry much in stock.

I know an armenian (i think) shop in rowland heights that did several cars for me. He also does custom bending in his shop, and he hasn't been afraid to touch nice cars so far.

There's a GREAT shop in La Habra, but like the guy you already tried to use, he wont touch 'exotic' cars, even to install a properly designed tuner part.
