Cayenne S reliability

I have been looking at some of The older cayenne s 04^ with about 50k to 60k miles and was wondering what I would have to look for to find one that will be reliable. I will be looking at them more once I get rid of the jeep.
Thanks

the early ones had some issues like the year you are mentioning.....
SOme have NONE, but a bunch did have them.
If you can get a more recent one you'd be in a better situation.
Good luck.

at best I could get a 05 but what kind of problems and prices. Would any of it be covered if I bought a warranty. I was also looking at a range rover but that is a P.O.S.

correct on the RR, stay away.

as for the early model cayennes check the boards, do a search.
There are post about a few problems the early ones had, that have been fixed in the newer models.
I can't give specifics, becuase I never had one that early, just remember reading about them from this forum.
Check around with the search function.

Thumbs up

I can only speak on the 2006 generation, I have had my 2006 Cayenne S for over 2years and purchased it new... so far so good all 38k have been trouble free, I change the oil myself every (0w40 x 9 quarts and factory filter ) 5.5-7.5K, and I am on my second set of factory front pads, and first set of rear pads.. I am also on my second set of rubber went with Goodyear oem .... The truck is bone stock and I enjoy it for what it is... sometimes I think I should have splurged for the Turbo S but the math was not in my favor could not justify a truck that cost more than my apt plus the annual difference in my insurance was a car payment... hope that helps...

I recently purchased an '05 CS with 95000km's on it, big trade up from my '99 explorer with 300000 km's. I've put about 13000km's on it in 5 months and done the routine maintenance myself ( oil and air filters). I also bought a Durametric tool and a shop manual to help with any codes. I love it and always look forward to driving it.

Are you sure the 05 over the 06? or is it budget? in this economy you can haggle a lot off these vehicles...

If I could get an 06 for under 25k I would but not any more than that. Its either this or a G500.

ok I have not seen any Cayenne S in good shape for under 25k... so go with a clean 05... make sure you check the carfax, or take the vin and pass by a porsche dealer to check on service/repairs or TSB's that have been addressed...

I don't know how this works is it good to find repairs or no? I know how to get it checked but should it come back clear or should it have had work done to it.?
yeah I feel stupid for not knowing this

Before I purchased mine, I got the VIN and then phoned the Porsche dealer where it was purchased. The service department was very helpfull with what work had been done to it and whether or not it had been a reliable vehicle.

yup just follow the steps that tonga3 did, call to confirm the service and if there were any hiccups... Some people believe in carfax and some don't... I do believe that if you get into a fender bender you can hide it from carfax providing you pay out of pocket and it never gets reported to the insurance company or the Police, but I also know that the Porsche dealers will post the service history, Also other chain type repair facilities may also report to Carfax the service, also Carfax will help with odometer fraud, and also show where and how the vehicle was registered private or lease fleet....

Herz,

I would highly recommend that you look at Carmax. You will get a larger selection of cars. SUVs are cheap these days. I just bought an '06 CS from them for $35k, 40k miles.

The reason I really like them right now it because there is no haggle pricing. They are not going to try to screw you on the deal by playing numbers games. If you notice something broken prior to purchase, they will most likely fix it for free. There is a 30 warranty on every car. You have 5 days to decide you don't like the car and return it for a FULL refund. And, you can purchase a bumper to bumper warranty from them for a reasonable price. The Warranty looks pretty good. It covers everything. And you can even take it to the Dealer for work if you pay a slightly higher deductable.

Aftermarket warranties on these cars are tricky. But I think a large company like Carmax is probably a safe bet.

At 50-60k miles you will be able to buy one for your price range, but you really should think about a GOOD aftermarket warranty because you are new to Porsches.

Otherwise it's a GREAT SUV! I had a jeep GC and hated that POS!! The Cayenne S is awesome. Worth every penny. Also you can do a lot of the maintainance yourself. Oil, Pads, Rotors, are all easy DIYs and will save you tons of cash in labor.

Go for an 05 or higher. If you have to buy an '04 because of price, try to get one built august or later. But lets face it, any Cayenne S is going to be better than that Jeep. Plus at that high mileage I think most of the bugs would have been addressed even on a early '04.

ps. You can try the dealer for info, but they are not giving as much out these days. Confidentiality issues, etc.

Good Luck!
