How do you Activate TPMS

I have an 08 GTS 6 speed. I just had my winter wheels installed. The dealer picked up my car and dropped it off at my house. Now my TPMS is not working. The dealer told me that it is because I had the summer wheels in the back. They told me to take the wheels out (which of course I did) and drive around for about 20 miles, the TPMS would reset itself. It did not. Has anyone every heard of this? I know the sensors work off of an RF frequency, why would I have to drive around to get the sensors to work. In any case, does anyone know if there is a way to active the sensors without having to go to the dealer? Also, does this mean that I will have to make two trips everytime I switch wheels?

I have an '06 Turbo S...I would assume the TPMS is the same. I just installed my winter tires. It takes a little fooling around but you can reset it with the on screen menu. Scroll through the menu to "tire pressure" or "settings" I'm not sure which. It will prompt you with questions like: Did you change tires?
Summer? Winter? All Season, etc. and it will list the different sizes. Once you do that bring up the screen with the vehicle icon. Instead of the 4 tire pressures there will be 4 blank lines by each wheel. Drive for a while and bingo the pressures will pop up on the screen. I wish I could be more precise but I would rather play with it than read the manual.

As soon as I drove off with my new wheels on the GTS, the computer beeped and asked me if I just got new tires. I clicked 'yes', hit the size, and the season, and done.

you need to hold the "reset" button under tire settings. select winter tires, the size, and then RESET. After that, it should take abour 2 miles, and should hold that in memory from that point on and monitor as well.

Just did this last week with my 18 winters with tpms.

I tried all of the above. Nothing worked. I brought the car back to the dealer. They claim they installed the wrong sensors. Now I have to bring the car back again as the new sensors are on order. I have a feeling they did not install sensors at all. Is there a way to tell if sensors were installed on the wheels without looking inside the wheel? I would love to know if I am getting the run around.

hey westport,

i see that you're located in westport, ct. which dealership are you working with? i bought my cayenne in nyc but i work in greenwich. for future problems/servicing, i'm thinking about using a dealership in ct since the nyc one generally doesn't provide loaners.
if you could let me know your experience with the ct dealers, i'd appreciate it. did you buy your car directly from them too?

I currently use Porsche of Fairfield. I have also used New Country Porsche of Greenwich. I have bought cars from both dealers. I use Fairfield because they are closer. I can't say I recommend either but have had fewer problems with New Country. I think both provide loaners. For my wheel install, fairfield even dropped off the loaner at my house and took my car for me, when it was done they returned my car and took the loaner back. Too bad they forgot to install the pressure sensors. Now they have to do it again. If you work in Greenwich, you might as well call New Country.

westport -
thanks for the info.
i decided to have my tires swapped out at a tirerack recommended shop near my place in ny. my nyc dealer quoted me $600 for the job (ridiculous) so i gave new country a call and they quoted me $200. unfortunately they didn't carry all seasons and wouldn't let me have my tires shipped there (makes sense).
what kind of problems did you have from new country? ever been to pepe porsche in white plains?

No real problems with new country. They do seem more expensive and are less flexible with loaners. For example: Fairfield charges 135 to swap wheels. With New Country I would have to plan well in advance if I needed a loaner. Fairfield is a huge facility so they have a bunch of loaners available. Are you tires on rims already?

if you use tire rack, you may want to consider getting a wheel and rim package. they will mount and balance the tires on the rims before they ship to you. A friend of mine just ordered a set. If you have TPMS, they can provide and install them too. prices are really reasonable. if you plan on keeping the car for awhile it might end up being cheaper. two swaps a year starts to add up when you need to mount and balance each time.

yeah i definitely considered that.. but i don't have any room to store the tires (one of the many minus' of living in nyc) so that's why i'm putting the allseasons on and planning on leaving them until they wear out.

Tire Pressure

Sensors replaced. The TPMS is working! This leads me to a new question. They set the tire pressure on the front tires to 37 and the rears to 46. This seems strange to me. I have 20" Pirrelli Scorpion Ice and snow tires. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Thanks for the input on the various dealers in CT.

I also live in NYC but work in Darien/Rowayton CT so a dealer in Greenwich is a lot more convenient for me then having to leave my car in NY and take the train to work or something.

Anyway, I have an entirely different issue. I picked up the 2004 CTT last night and from what I have been told 2004s do not have TPMS. But this truck most definitley does. Has the little image of the truck with all four wheels and right now they are just dashed lines. Also when i start the car up it says "Tire Monitoring Off" or something like that.

I really don't care if I have the feature or not. If I can get the sensors installed on the new 21" OEM GTS wheels I just bought I might do it but if its more headache than worth it maybe I'll just hold off. The car is out of warranty so any little fixes like this will cost me an arm and leg. I might just keep an eye on the tires and check them once a month with a nice digital tire guage I have which even does 1/10s of a lb and is very easy to use. Also with the brand new Michelin Latitude Sports I shouldn't have much trouble keeping the pressures set evenly.

Btw, where can we figure out the factory pressure spec for different size tires? Now that I am running the 21s I assume the manual will not have those specs?

Thanks, Dan
