Arrow Xenon Headlamp Assembly? - Can it be done yourself?

My 2008 Cayenne has stock headlights, now if I buy the factory made xenon headlamp assembly is it just a plug and play type deal? Meaning I just remove a few screws pull out one housing and plug in another type of thing?

Is this all I need or do I need a part called a control module as well?:

I am not 100%, but I would imagine that because of the power draw from xenons, there would be a required module such as that...could be wrong here

Stock headlights operate on 12Volts whereas Xenon lights require 11500Volts (not sure about the exact number but somewhere around it). And therefore requires you to install a module that converts 12V to 11500V. It's not just plugging the xenon lamps in.

That is what the ballast and ignitor assembly is for and that is built into the headlight itself. I know on the 996 I was able to upgrade to Xenon headlights just by installing them in place of my halogens. I did not have auto-leveling however as that required additional sensors and module to control it but I never missed that. Since the Cayenne is much more computerized however not sure how plug and play it might be. You might be able to just swap the headlight assemblies and not have the auto leveling function. Might require a minor upgrade to the headlight fuses however for the initial spike in volts for Xenon startup.

You will only need headlight assembly and a set of wiring harness, but this set up will not have auto leveling.

Exclamation Changing from Halogen To Xenon

Can someone verify for me if this can be done by simply buying new xenon headlight assembly and wiring harness without getting any error messages or anything?

Your expertise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mikhail.

I have done it before in my 996 no error message but there is a lot less complicated compare to 955. Personally I don't think it'll be any problem since halogen lights don't have any latteral or vertical movement like they do in xenon.

Actually they would work. I just got a donor lamp the other day for cheap to see what would i need to make it work. When my new set of lamps come in, ill rewire it and put it on. Ill probably offer them for sale on exchange base , meaning, If somebody will want them, i will need a person to send me a new set of headlamps, and i will send them mine, which would be rewired and working without you doing anything but to switch them on your car. Will keep you posted on that.

Probably your P-dealer would need to re-program the LCM (light control module) to flip the switch from Halogen to HID in order to disable the warning light on the dash.

no, you dont need to do that. i upgraded my regular halogens headlamps to aftermarket hid units and nothing pops up.

Like mentioned above, the auto leveling unit will not work, you have to manually adjust if necessary. Everything else will work.

Don't bother purchasing the OEM xenons. They'll still set you back thousands of dollars. Much better option to install custom HID (Xenons) yourself using your current halogen headlight assemblies. Depending on the unit you buy, you may or may not get error codes from the computer. But you can get around that by installing an error code eliminator anyway.

Set of HIDS for both low beams and high beams will set you back about $200. Look for european made digital slim kits.

I installed my own and they run perfectly and look amazing. Best colour to get is a diamond white. If you go too low wavelength (too high in colour temperature/Kelvin) then your lights won't project as far as your stock halogen bulbs do. But stay in the white->yellow range (white looks best, but yellow light will travel further) and avoid blue/purple stuff.

There are plenty for sale on ebay but I cannot vouch for quality.

If you want blinding high beams, buy a set of 35W HIDs for your low beam setup, and a set of 55W HIDS for your high beams. And make sure the bulb temperatures are the same.

Good luck!

LOL...dont bother with original Porsche projector headlamps? Did you even know that in Europe gov't is working on a law to make aftermarket HID unit illegal ?? Blinding approaching drivers and causing dangerous situation are causes of these lights upgrades.

Secondly Slim ballasts are crap. They will always either throw a code or stop working after few months. Regular ballast like Raptor kit from DDMTuning are working perfectly with all my previous german cars i had. And yes, they all had projector upgrade, not just HID blinding kit.

Update: After taking my donor lamp apart, i have come about a device attached to the housing, which i may be able to utilize with my project. Its a shutter that works in conjunction with high beam. Basically while low beam Xenon is on, and you turn on your high beam, the xenon stays on, but a shutter collapses which gives you more xenon light in conjunction with the halogen high beam bulb. Ill test this thing out tomorrow.
