Tailgate Badge Dilemma
#16
What's the saying? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? Putting the wrong badges on your car doesn't diminish the vehicle(s) being imitated in any way. Car guys get a kick out of knowing the truth and the general public could give 2 ****s if you have a Cayenne, S, GTS, Turbo or Turbo S.

you see i do think it deminishes the car, let me give you an example of how i read it.
if someone puts a "turbo" badge on an "S" model and a normal punter sees it (who knows nothing about our cars)
they will think that the "turbo" is not all that aggressive, or doesnt have red brakes or big wheels or quad pipes etc......so in there eyes the turbo is deminished.
if they saw a "proper" turbo they would see the bonnet (hood) bulges huge air intakes on the front and so on...and be suitibly impressed.
those in the know will spot an imposter from a hundred yards and chuckle to themselves.
(i would look at the suspension first then the clocks) if they hold up its proberly the real deal.
unless you want to lye on the floor underneath and take a peep at the manifolds.
if i owned a turbo S i would be hacked off at a 3.2 (VW engined) cayenne passing itself off as the same. people would say they had smoked a turbo S at the lights when it was a cayenne 3.2

But that's the thing, a normal punter (as you put it) on this side of the pond usually doesn't notice the subtle differences between models. A bump here, quad pipes there, colored calipers - it's all the same to them.
The imposters are just lulling them into a false sense of superiority. Then you smoke them with the real deal

mind you to be honist i would not know the difference between a top of the range corvette/mustang/charger and a base model (i love american muscle cars) so i take your point.
right...im going to put a farrari badge on my fiat 500......

I don't think the average American motoring public knows much about any cars, domestic or otherwise. They usually know manufacturers and models to some degree, but the variations within a model range are usually lost on them.

in the UK, we seem to be a nation of jeremy clarkson's (top gear)
everybody is into "one upmanship" with there cars, hence loads of bmw 320's posing as M3's etc.
WHY??? it is what it is. & you are what you are
it just so happens that im 21..6foot 3" develishly handsome and have a 12" appendage....and earn in excess of 5 million a month.

We have a lot of M and AMG badges on base BMWs and MBs here. Along with stuff like this Honda Civic M3

ONE234 how many Ford Escort XR3i's did we see back in the day dressed as Ford Escort RS Turbo's?

+1, tell it the way it is, or nothing at all to keep them guessing

i cant understand the "no badge" thing?
if you own a rolex, then would you prefer it to have no name? so people would think it was a cheap watch NO.
if you bought a hugo boss suit, would you not like it to have the label..NO
so whats the deal with the car?
i am a badge/label freak, i love to have quality things around me, and work very hard to allow this, and being somewhat of an extrovert i like to show this off.
i can understand the introverts that want a "low profile"...but then why not buy a "low profile" car..
what say you lot?

Gear heads will laugh at you for trying to be something you're not.
The masses will never notice an extra "S"
I was driving with my boss to a meeting and he couldn't get over how an intern could afford "a $100k car." He thought I was into something illegal on the side.
I have a Cayenne V6.
Far from $100k. Most people will see Porsche and assume expensive.
Same idea goes for the Boxster. 95% of people won't notice its differences from a 911, they just notice it as a Porsche.
