Can you drive a Cayenne in the desert?
Does the Cayenne have the ability to be driven in the desert with dunes and whatnot? Secondly, what is the Cayenne GTS? A street-only version of the Cayenne?
GTS to me, is the prettier version of the cayennes. Should have sufficient offroad abilities but it is limited due to larger wheel size, which you can accommodate with offroad tires. The hardcore offroader Cayenne transsyberia is basically the same as the GTS but with smaller diameter rims and standard ride height. GTS sits a little lower than the rest, but still have air suspension to increase ride height.
well since i do own a ctt and i do live in saudi arabia , and did drive it on loose desert sand ( trust me , its nothing like beach sand ) i'll put in my 2 cents :
- make sure you deflate your tires ( i run 20 psi in the fronts and 15 psi in the back ) , just make sure you don't turn the steering wheel to quickly which might cause the tire to come off the rim.
- watch you engine temps! these things generate a ton of power for the sand , the result is a ton of heat
- remeber that these things are HEAVY! and sometimes momentum is not your freind ( espacially on while driving fast on a sandy track )
- don't be afraid to spin the motor at high rpm's , heck sometimes you have to bounce of the rev limiter once or twice to clear a hill ( you don't want it to shift up when you are going up )
- always try to stop the vehicle with its face pointing down hill if possible , this makes moving again much easier .
- avoid hittting your brakes hard when stopping , this will cause the tires to dig in and will make it harder to move again , if not stuck.
- keep in mind the tires on the ctt are low profile street tires , exactly what you don't want on the sand, coupled with the fact that a ctt is heavy will cause it to want to dig in the sand when ever you start moving .
- do not the transfer case into low range , its too low for the sand and will cause the tranny to shift alot .
- one last tip , avoid dropping into the "bowl" of the sand dune , cause usually that is where all the really soft sand is , and if you do get stck there , pulling you out is much harder
so have fun , keep your windows closed, and don't forget to show us how you did
