So to fix the coolant pipe issue, replace the coil, and do the 60,000 mile service we're looking at about $4400.

Does that seem a little high to anyone? This is my first time dealing with Porsche on major repairs...and they don't seem to want to budge at all.

Hmm...seems high to me. I estimate around the $3K mark with labor.

I thought the coil packs were a TSB issue. Doesn't that mean they get replaced even out of warranty at no charge? All of mine were taken care of at my 40k mile service. I believe the coil packs are a fairly straight-forward DIY.

How to go about haggling

How do you guys recommend I go about working down the price? The fact that they didn't warn me of ANY issues on the 27 point inspection done a few months ago wasn't important to them. I was offered a 10% discount and some kind of 'Porsche club discount.' The service dude said he'd do his best for me... but unless he's waiting to surprise me with the bill... I've been quoted around $4400 for everything.

The first question when I brought my car into the shop was 'Are you the first owner?"

I answered no and the service guy quickly retorted 'Wrong answer'

Should I look for the service manager when I go to pick up the car? How can I get these guys to be a little more reasonable?

What's TSB?

I would lobby hard for the coolant pipes to be covered since it's a known issue on the '04s. In addition to that, other known issues are: driveshaft and tailgate struts. Some say the torque converter seal as well. If you have to take this up to Porsche directly, you should.

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin (aka recall). Sorry, I don't have a number for Porsche but I'm sure the dealer does. Speak to the Service Mgr or the Gen mgr if you have to.

@searay,

Did the dealer break down the actual cost for each item? I was concerned about the coolant pipes and searched around this site.

Seems like the going rate is:
-coolant pipes $2,000
-$60k service $1,000

not sure if it cost $1,000 for the ignition coil.

Neil, where do you get your car serviced in the Bay Area?

Fletcher Jones in Fremont. Gunther is a great service mgr based on my experience.

hey guys, sorry to go off topic & be somewhat redundant because this question has been vaguely answered in this thread but i wanted to double/triple check..

i'm looking at a 2005 cayenne S, the car has 7,700 miles, still smells new! it's a family friend, just a random extra car to him that he literally never drove but does the 2005 have the same coolant issue's at all as the 2004? i've searched & i haven't really come by it being an issue in the 2005 but i was told my fuel pumps wouldn't be an issue in my 2008 335 & i just got done lemoning that car for fuel pump failure. so..you guys seem to know what you're talking about so i figured it doesn't hurt to ask!

thanks for any help & sorry again, for going off topic OP

I think the 2005 has the same plastic pipes like the 04?
