Thanks for the tsb. Just read it and for those interested it states ....if consuming more than 2.11 quarts per 620 miles do not replace the engine, replace the oil scraper rings!

I'm still waiting for the check oil light to come on but I'm only 250 miles into my $468.37 dealer supplied oil change so who knows, may need some scraper rings. thanks again.

What's going on with the oil consumption? Mine 04' CTT (just turned 72,000 miles doesn't burn a drop, however I had to get my left turbo replaced, a cam seal busted in it. Warranty is took care of it. $3,600 job! But if it starts chewing on some oil, I guess I assume it is normal.

 

Quick update - been steadily burning 2qts every 600mi +- 20miles. Needed an inspection & the check engine light came on yesterday (feels like a bad coil) so figured I'd let the dealer do that and convince me that the excess oil on my left tailpipe and the current consumption is normal. Will let you know.

 

Nice to know I'm not the only one with a Porsche factory installed smoke screen.

It is embarrassing, but then again what's more embarrassing is getting beat by an SUV.

BTW. my 06CTT can burn about a qt every 1000 miles when I have a heavy foot, it burns much less with my normal grandpa driving to and from work everyday.

 

for everyone here that top off their oil.. what do you use?
Mobil 1 0W-40 or 5W-40.. both are listed in the manual, however i'm not sure what they used in my last oil change (oct 2010).. indy shop, not porsche..
is it ok to "mix"? e.g. if they used Mobil 1 0W-40, ok to top off with 5W-40? (and vice-versa)?

 

do you get neg. temperature where you live?..if not then its ok...

 

nope.. houston.. last few weeks were cold, but i don't drive it often, just a garage diva and when i need to take out the kids.. coldest (at one point) was 26F (outside)..
just worried that it it'll cause problems if i mix 0W-40 and 5W-40 (depending on what the shop used in my oil change last october).. was thinking to do an oil change again in the dealership just to be sure.. unless this is ok to mix..

 

I wouldn't worry too much about top off differences since there is like 10 quarts of oil in our systems so percentage wise its not a big deal. Plus they are both recommended weights.

To the OP, in the Subaru World, we don't like Mobil 1 on our turbo cars because of the reason your stating. It seems to miraculously disappear at an unbelievable rate.

 

Asked my Porsche tech about this in the past.

His response was providing the ambient temperature was above the minimum spec for the oil, there is no problem topping off with 5w on a 0w fill or vice versa.

No need to change all your oil again.

 

10/27 Update - so oil consumption has been increasing to the point where I needed to add a quart about every 500 miles. The dealer has it now and they're talking about an engine replacement - yikes!! They're tearing it down it chunks and working with Porsche to make a determination. Thank you CPO!!!! They think it will be a multi-week process and gave me a next gen 6 cylinder so I'm not walking around town.

 

Im driving an 04 ctt with 105,000 miles. I do not get any smoke at startup or under acceleration. I have driven it like I stole it since I got the vehicle at 67k miles.
I use about a quart every 2k miles. There is a threshold for oil consumption stated in the owner's manual. I think a quart every 300 miles is very excessive.

 

If you have seen my posting in other threads - mine starting burning oil like crazy. A slippery slope that ended up with ticking (scored cylinder wall) and then eventually a new engine. Porsche USA covered about 40% - total bill of $12K.

Here is where I will be somewhat controversial - I know what the book says about oil consumption - but for the non-turbo versions - a quart every 500 miles is the sign of something wrong - have someone scope your cylinder wall immediately. The proof - the new engine does not burn a drop of oil. Now at 24K miles - one oil change no additional oil! Start with the cylinder that is on the drivers side - two away from the firewall. The other clue - try buying any aftermarket parts for the engine to rebuild it....it would be so simple to re-sleeve like I had to do on my 911 after 80K miles.

My engine was taken totally apart and I was amazed at all the aluminum slag after casting - took a pen knife and most would easily flick off - imagine that getting inside the cylinder wall! My chief suspect was that and poor oil circulation to the in question cylinder.

 

Yep... I've run into the same problem. My dealership said the lost of oil is happening with both the Turbo and the GTS editions.

Someone should definitely take this a step further....

just received a call from the dealer ... there was scoring in the cylinder(s)?, a new "engine assembly" has been approved by Porsche and the rush order has been placed to Germany. Looks like I'll be in loaner for another couple of weeks. Crazy, but glad to know they're standing behind the vehicle!

 

I have an 06TTS and mine is the same. Mobil 1 is not cheap....
