Any thoughts on the Cayenne vs BMW X5

I have test driven both the Cayenne S and the BMW X5 4.4 , I admit I like them both. Did any of you consider the X5 .

I haven't owned a Cayenne because the rear cargo space is smaller than I need but I do have an 03 Range Rover which replaced my LX470. My 03 HSE was one of the first ones delivered and had a ton of problems, some of which (excessive wind noise; scalloped tires) they just cannot seem to fix. Maybe all of the problems that I experienced have been been fixed by now but the ownership experience cannot compare to the wonderful experience of owning a Lexus. The HSE looks great and rides good but I will be looking to change back to Lexus when they introduce the new LX, which is a redone Sequoia.

X5 much better then Cayenne...

Go with the X5!

Traded my 4.6is X5 for a Turbo Cayenne and was so sorry.

1. The Cayenne eats tires, expect maybe 6-7000 miles. X5 I got 19,000 on first set
2. Hesitation on the turbo is terrible compared to the naturally aspirated X5 which has excellent acceleration.
3. X5 transmission is far superior to the Cayenne especially when the X5 is in “S†(sport) mode.
4. X5 seats fold down in 1 second. The Cayenne you have to remove all of the head rests, pull up the bottom fold it forward and then fold the seat down…it is a very poor design.
5. X5 has a clam shell tail gate so when you lean into the back compartment your pants will stay clean. On the Cayenne you lean on the bumper to reach into the back a get dirty every time. Also, the tailgate comes in handy if you have to carry something long.
6. Steering on the Cayenne is terrible I have had Champion Porsche align it multiple times and it still pulls right and left.
7. Hands down the X5 is far superior….If you decide on the Cayenne Turbo I have a white & tan 2004 with 7000mi for sale. I will be getting the new 4.8is X5

Noway man my sister has an X5 4.4. The handling, look and preformance is nothing compared to my Cayenne S. The way I see it is why would you want an X5? Its been in the market for a couple of years. There are so much of them that they are no longer special. If you really like the x5 wait till there is a face lift at least. My 99 cents

WOW X5 is more superior? look at that cheap dashboard on the X5 4.8. Look at that square styling, poor aerodynamic, the car handles like a boat, I got so much headache sitting in my friend's X5. How can acceleration be better in the X5? I've driven my gf's turbo for almost 300miles and I can bet that the acceleration does not feel like a SUV. Her car has no hesitation issue too, whenever i step on the gas pedal, it just flies!

The Cayenne sure has it's fans but do a search on this site for some posting I (and others) have made regarding the problems with the Cayenne.

I love much about my Cayenne but the sloppy tranny and other annoyances make it a total deal breaker for me. I would never buy a Cayenne if I were you.

I drove both trucks (Cayenne S and X5 4.4) and I can say that they are the most fun SUVs to drive out there.

I was impressed with both but I liked the Cayenne a bit more I have to admit. The aerodynamics is much better for highspeed runs, the engine sounds amazing, brakes are pretty good and I thought the tranny was very sharp for a truck. I did not like the small cargo area, the rather cheap stereo and the suspension feels a bit too rough at low speeds sometimes.

The X5 is a very good truck, drove one just last night actually (driven it many times before though). It does everything very well, but does not "surprise" me like the Cayenne does. The engine is fairly good, but the tranny is a bit too sloopy to my taste, even though the 6 gears are a welcomed improvement over the 5 speed tranny. The looks of the truck are OK, even though I've not been impressed with the Cayenne's looks either. The Porsche is, however, much more recent and pimp.

I think you can't go wrong with either of these trucks, but the X5 is getting a (much needed) facelift soon so you might want to wait or get a very good deal on the remaining ones at your local dealer. Just don't get it Silver like 95% of the X5s out there...

i don't know the x5 never did anything every time i drove it.
but the first time i drove the cayenne - I was in love. I could not stop thinking how much I liked the car.
The rest is history.
