Very rough running 04 CTT
Very rough running 04 CTT
I just had my 04CTT in recently to the stealership, they replaced coils for #1 & 3 cylinder (wouldn't replace them all but they recommended it-obviously on my dime) I ordered the remainder from Suncoast. My invoice shows the dealer installed the new 08 numbered coils, when I was changing the coils out I realised they used the 07 numbers (another lie!). The dealer said the plugs looked great (factory Beru plugs about a year old), when I removed them to change them out to the NGK Iridiums, they were all black and completely fouled with fuel -WTF! Looks like another visit to the dealer coming up, I'll be sure to have all my old parts in hand and see how this goes. Really wondering whats going on, my mileage has been horrible, terrible idle-very rough, thought the coils would be the cure-just test drove it, seems a little better, initial acceleration with no load I get what sounds like backfiring or excessive fuel igniting in the exhaust system (maybe this is normal with cat delete pipes???) no service engine light, and no durametric to play with to check it out further. Anyone have any similar experiences? Ideas as to what else might be wrong?? Will try to get it out and test drive a little more and see if it clears up any, really seems to be running rich.
The Dealer issue here is they said they replaced with the Newer Packs, but did not. So, you paid for something you didn't get.
Then, they said the plugs looked great; however, they're black. Good plugs should have a reddish-grey tint due to additives in the fuel (replacing the lead).
I realize they won't replace all your Coils unless you get an CEL, but you're probably owed a REFUND from the previous visit...AND... them honoring that CoilPack Recall.
Surpised you didn't get a CEL. Heck, from what you wrote so far, they probably pulled the bulb out -

The plugs that came out of the holes where the new coils are still black and fouled, not as bad as the others (some were very wet) either something is not firing at all, or it is dumping a lot of excess fuel (granted it was a cold start before bringing in) but the plugs should never be this wet (looks like it was flooded!). I will be questioning the dealer about the previous repair, the fact that the parts that are identified on the invoice are not in there, see what happens at that point. Looking at the old plugs I can see why the gas mileage is dreadful. I will try to post up some pics for reference if I get a chance later.
My CTT had much the same problem. All my coils are good. I bought a cheap ELM 327 £20 and could see one of my mafs had failed. I replaced both MAFs and the rough running has gone.
ELM is very good for the cost and can read boost, fuel, AIT, engine temp, fault codes etc etc for £20 you cant go wrong
