Newbie battery question

I have just got a 2006 Cayenne from my nephew which has not been used and was sitting in his garage. I put the key in and nothing. Then the key will not come out ( is that normal?). I had AA jump it and I drove it for an hour or so with no problem. Pull back in garage, shut if off and try to restart......nothing and key won't come out again. Please pardon my ignorance but is this as simple as needing a new battery? Thanks in advance for any help.

Don

If the battery is original, It's probably at about the end of It's life. My 2006 was mfg 7/2005--the battery wasn't completely gone but was showing the slow to crank syndrome. Had it replaced at the dealer--$530 $385 for the battery and $145 labor. The battery is under the front seat-requires a special tool (10mm tripple square bit) to unbolt the seat , if you're going to DIY.

The key not coming out when the battery is dead is perfectly normal

Sounds like a dead battery; I would not advise going to the dealer to replace it. Porsche OEM batteries are terrible. Do yourself a huge favour and buy a regular battery for $100-150 dollars and call it a day.

That's what I thought but figured I would ask the experts here. I am no stranger to wrenching on cars but they are usually old Corvettes. I will definitely do this myself, thanks for the information. Anyone use an Optima in these cars? I like them for the leak proof aspects but now sure of the fit since I have not looked at what's in there yet.

Don.

I don't agree that Porsche batteries are terrible--the Varta maintenance free battery that came in my 2006S lasted from July 05 till july 2011 and it wasn't completely shot when I replaced it. The present replacements are made by Moll in Germany and are not maintenance free. It's a mystery to me why Porsche doesn't bring in the Varta's like they used in the orig mfg. I checked with Johnson Controls (they recently purchased Varta) and they don't sell Varta in the US--but it would seem that PCNA could just as easily bring in Varta as Moll. Incidently Sunset sells the Moll for $230 but they are shipped without acid so you have to buy that locally plus I imagine the shipping is pricey as they are quite heavy. In regards to Optima--they won't fit. I belive it's because they're too tall.
