Steering Wheel Buttons

Was in for minor warranty work and mentioned the "skin" on 3 of my buttons was bunching up, sort of wrinkled on the face of the buttons. Replacement was covered under warranty and they replaced the entire airbag unit. Apparently you can't get the buttons individually but need to get the entire unit. Don't even want to know what that would've cost. Nice having brand new but get's you thinking about a new interior, then a new car ...

The same thing is happening to the button on my shifter. I suspect that I'll have to replace the shifter ****.

I know that some people have repaired the aluminum look trim in the 996 that has had the same issue. I think you could probably do the same for the Cayenne. The repair involves removing the damaged part, sanding it down and repainting it with silver paint, followed by clear coat. It's not the most elegant solution, but it works and it doesn't cost much. I've been considering it for the button on my shifter. The disadvantage of this method for the steering wheel is that you'd lose the lettering on the buttons.

the buttons do not appear to come off and are part of the air bag not the steering wheel
