Ordered and put in a replacement screen this weekend - took about an hour - the screen was about $120 on ebay - it works very well - the new one seems to have a polarizing filter on it - so it disappears with my sunglasses on...will report if back if this continues to be an issue..

Twilight - all LCD displays have a polarizing filter on them - they won't work without one. The segments are turned on and off by changing the polarization of the "liquid crystal" which has light behind it. More expensive polarizing sunglasses use "circular" polarization, which means the LCD's will still work, but be a bit dimmer then the surrounding environment.

understood - the old display never "disappeared" while wearing sunglasses...the new display is awesome - no more faded numbers - and very brilliant - but disappears while wearing my sunglasses....oh well....

 

The old one probably used circular polarization. It's typically lower contrast (I note you say the new one is "very brilliant") but it does work well with polarized glasses.
