Is there a significant disadvantage in the CD-based Nav?
I realize that, but does that only become a problem when you are on a trip in a different area? I imagine it's one CD per 'area', 4 total for the US? Most people would use only 1 CD most of the time with the car
The big disadvantage is you can will be prompted for the Nav CD if you don't have it in and are listening to a music CD. If you have a CDchanger, and are using it for music then no big.
Big disadvantage is that you need all the discs and you would have to switch disc if you were doing cross country trip or going to canada. I used to have CD based Navigation on my 02 330ci and it was only for NorthEAst region, so to go to florida i would have to buy a CD from the dealer and half way through my trip i would have to switch it. There isn't much of a disadvantage. Then again Map isn't much of a disadvantage either to some. I prefer the DVD based as it has more information and in one disc, never have to touch it just put it in once and go.

The PCM2 in my Carrera is CD based. It can do local or recent trips without requesting the nav cd, but if it needs more info, it will prompt you to pop any cd in the in-dash player out and put the nav cd in. Sometimes it's a pain and sometimes not. If you are using the CD changer or have an ipod hooked up though a modulator, then this is no big deal since you can pretty much leave the nav cd in the drive.

Must be different for the '05. The Nav unit is seperate from the CD player. In addition to the 6 CDs in the changer, I can put one in the dash, and never get prompted for the DVD from NJ to FL.

it took me forever to find it. i looked all over the rear trunk and could not find it.
yeah they were cd based previously ITO.
pros & cons. CD based nav can only load very limited data. i have to switch from audio CD back to nav CD from city to city in LA. DVD based nav is cool since no more switching disc. however, u'll lose the storge tray under the seat where i usually put a Mobil 1 & a loaded pistol in there.

I was absolutely set on a 2005 instead of a 2004, mostly because of the DVD nav. I finally ended up getting a leftover 2004, and I have no regrets. First, I rarely use the nav. Second, the nav has 3 cds (my S4 had 9), so I doubt I'll need to switch the cds anyway. Third, I installed both an ipod and Sirius, so I hardly ever use the in dash cd. I have yet to use the cd changer.
So, I wouldn't base the choice of a Cayenne on the nav. It's not a great system anyway. My wife's Toyota puts the Porsche (and the Audi) to shame.

I think the change to DVD was market pressure, the data is the same and rarely would one need more than one CD disc. I travel all over the northeast and all my regular trips are saved in memory and the new ones need the CD for about a minute and its done.
ps There is storage under the drivers seat, but the put the Battery in it ..haha
