Shaking under acceleration - 2004 Cayenne S
Hi all,
Ive had my 2004 Cayenne S for two years and this has been my biggest issue yet. Coming home last night, I noticed that under any acceleration in any gear at 1-3k rpm, the car shakes like crazy. Even in gear at a light, the car shakes noticibly. However it shifts cleanly and the shake seems to be less at higher rpm and when keeping the car at speed. After babying the car home and discussing with my dad, we both thought that it was in need of a cardan drive shaft, a common issue for 955s with a clear path to replacement. The only issue that makes us think different is the fact that in neutral and in park, with a very small touch of throttle (to ~700-1000k rpm), you can still feel the shake slightly. That worries me a lot as I thought the driveshaft isn’t in motion while in neutral/park. I don’t know enough about cars to know if it shaking very slightly in neutral indicates something else or if it still is the drive shaft.
Car just hit 120k miles and was bought at 93k. The person who had it before had dealer maintained documents and fixed some common transmission issues that commonly occur with 955s.
Open to any thoughts, suggestions, or further questions needed for context.

Very easy to check the shaft, should be able to slide right under the vehicle and reach it with your hand. Mine had a LOT of play when I first noticed the shaking, mainly at higher RPM's though. The shaking was subtle and low in noise, felt like washing machine vibration.
As for other shaking, when coils/plugs start to crack they can introduce shaking at idle RPM's too and some have mentioned motor mounts needing replacement. So I'd start with ruling out the shaft as that's a very easy thing to rule out.

If the acceleration is weak during the vibration it may be an oxygen sensor. I had a similar problem on my 04 CS. The problem worsened to really sluggish acceleration with a "pulsing" and vibration at low revs until the revs built up and then also
a surging when coming off the throttle at high revs. There were no fault codes or check engine light, but replacing the primary oxygen sensors fixed the problem (after cardan shaft bearing, MAF sensor and coil replacement !)
