Snow chains on 958?

I picked up my cayenne on Sunday and among the many, many forms to sign was one that stated snow chains might not work on the car and if I used them I was solely responsible for what happened. I drive up into the Sierra several times during the winter and there are plenty of times when chains are required for most vehicles. So I have 2 questions:

1) when snow chains are required, does the Cayenne get a pass (some 4x4s like Jeeps do). I'm guessing no. I suspect the cayenne is capable enough but doubt the police would let me by without them.

2) can you put snow chains on an 18" wheel? If so, any advice on where to buy?

Insert:----------Snow chains are required on NON all wheel drive vehicles. Vans, suv's, anything with all wheel drive does not follow the "chain required" rule.

2) can you put snow chains on an 18" wheel? If so, any advice on where to buy?

Insert:----------As for chains, Porsche makes some cables that are wonderful. I could put those on my 21's or whatever tire you have. If you buy a great winter tire/wheel package, ie. 18 inch and scorpion ice/snow tire you should be able to tackle 95% of all cold weather.

Good luck.

Read above inserts.

With my '08 Cayenne, I always used tire cables whenever CHP required chains. Planning to do the same with my new '12 Cayenne.

I even think my old vs. new tire sizes are close enough where I can use the same set of cables

You can find them at any regular auto parts store, a decent set will run about $90. Don't bother with the cheapo $35 sets.

Any issues with quality of those chains? Huge difference between the $500 at suncoast and the $90 for your chains. I'm tempted to go with the cheaper set but I don't want to have them snap and cause damage for $1k and make me regret it.

No problems at all, I've been using them for 4 years. I think SCC was the manufacturer.

Wow that's pretty steep. FWIW, I only put cables on the front tires.

Ok I have 2 questions and they may be dumb. So please don't rag on me.

1. Are there chains for the 21" OEM wheels? I have the Turbo II wheels.
2. Is it dumb to put chains on the Turbo II wheels as it may get damaged?

I looked at Suncoast's site and I didn't see any chains for 21" wheels. I'm thinking of heading up to Lake Tahoe and I know I'll need chains.

You will have NO PROBLEMS getting past chain control without chains. C.A. law states that you must have Four-wheel drive(All-Wheel Drive) in order to pass without having to put on chains. I have one friend who puts snow and ice tires on his Gallardo when going up to Tahoe in winter!

I leave the Cayenne at home when I go up to Tahoe/Sierras. The Turbos kicking in when you are on Snow/Ice caused a few problems in the past! That a lot of power to be putting down in the snow.

If I were you, I would get really good snow and ice tires. I use them on a Jeep Grand Cherokee and I have never once lost grip.

I do the drive from SF to Tahoe and back every week during the winter. I have the standard 18" wheels with all season tires on my '11 Cayenne. I've gone through some pretty deep snow with no chains. As long as you're not running summer tires you should be fine. If the road is plowed you don't even need to change the AWD settings... when there's more than about 6" built up on the road since the plow last came through you can start locking up the differentials.

There was one storm last winter where me and a bud were caravaning from Mammoth back to Tahoe. his explorer was all over the road, my cayenne was rock solid. when he spun out and got buried in a snow bank I pulled him out no problem.

Thanks all. Since I have Mud & Snow tires already on the 18" wheels, I am just going to throw a set of chains in the rear in case I need them.

Well, I read the rules online about the snow chains and such and even with AWD or 4 wheel drive, they can deny you entry into the chain areas. Even with snow tires. I'm not sure what type of tires I got on the CTT. It's whatever was OEM from the factory.
