Post CDR-31 audio system

I'm trading in my 997 cab for a 958, but due to the high demand, the only model with most of the options I want only has the basic CDR-31 system. Any feedback as to how good the sound quality is?

I have the PCM base system which is the 235 watt system. The sound is fantastic. It is very clear and gets plenty loud. I would not let this hold you back. The Bose system seems to add a little more low end, but for using the iPod they sounded pretty much the same to me. The Burm system is amazing but expensive.

The sound quality will be a function of the speakers, not the head unit (sorry if this is what you meant). I have the CDR-31 with the Bose sound system (sub is stored within the spare tire). Sounds great - I use an iPod velcro'd to the passenger's console handle.

The head unit itself looks fine, but I wish it had the ability to show iPod track info via say bluetooth, an equalizer, etc. It's pretty bare bones in that respect. The NAV (PCM) can be retrofit, but I believe you loose the ability for sat radio. I'm tempted...

I didn't phrase my response very well.

In my experience, if sound alone is your key criterion, the CDR head unit with the Bose speakers will keep you happy. If you like the techie bells and whistles too, it will disappoint. I haven't listened to the base speakers.

There is no USB connection on the CDR-31 for iPod connection, make sure you know this.

Really, no USB connection in the basic CDR-31 installed on the Cayenne?

That's correct. Unless you upgrade to PCM/NAVI you don't get the USB connection. Even if you upgrade from CDR-31 to Bose, there is no USB connection. Hard to believe, but it 's true. Porsche just wants your money, what can you do!!!
