Base CDR-31 audio vs. PCM audio

There are actually 4 levels of Porsche sound systems,CDR-31, PCM, Bose, and Burmester. Most people do not know when they order the PCM/NAVI option the audio system is automatically upgraded. Here are the differences, from 100 watts to 235 watts, 4-channel amp to a separate 7-channel amp, 10 speakers to 11 speakers including a center channel speaker, 6.5-inch front door woofers to 8-in, and DVD audio playback capability. I had a chance to compare the PCM audio to the Bose(585 watts including a 200 watt subwoofer), surprisingly I found the bass of the PCM stronger than the Bose. The Bose does have better overall sonic clarity. But for day-to-day listening, including CDs and iPod, I find the PCM to be more than adequate. We have the Bose in our Panamera, and for our upcoming 2013 Cayenne, We will settle for PCM and save the $2000 for something else. Of course most salesmen will not explain all these to you, they will most likely let you compare the base non-PCM audio to the Bose and in that case Bose will definitely sound much better.

Smart choice to save the 2K$

Thanks for this. Never knew about the secret 2nd level. I, too, opted for the standard audio for our CS, and didn't think it sounded too bad. Didn't know there was an actual *more* standard system.

This 'secret' 2nd level PCM audio has been increased from 125watts to 235watts comparing to previous Cayenne generation. The current PCM audio is now comparable to the previous Cayenne's Bose system. For most listening conditions, it is more than adequate.

In the Porsche U S configurator, this 2nd level audio is now available as a separate option and is referred to as CDR Plus. But you cannot select both CDR Plus and PCM/NAVI options, it makes sense as the latter option already includes the upgraded audio.

Yes, good point to call out. I too have the PCM "upgrade." While some will say it's terrible, it sounds totally fine to my ears. It does lack some depth, but I'm totally fine with it.

I've posted this screen grab image before from the 2011 specs in the past, which details out what you stated. Should be helpful to others who are still choosing.

The use of the word "adequate" in relation to the choice of sound in a car is unthinkable to me. But that is what makes the world go round (but its the music that helps it keep time). Its nice we get so many choices to spec out the systems that fit each of us best. For me the best dollars I spent on options were the Burmester dollars. Been building my collection of DVD Audio and the stuff just brings tears to my eyes.

"It's the music that helps it keep time"....Great line!
The Sound System is like a soundtrack for life in the car.
Some people remember the music from a movie and some just recall if the actresses were hot.
I always try to go for the best on Factory Performance and Sound options as they are things I enjoy daily.
