Considering GTS vs 3.6
Considering GTS vs 3.6
me and the wifey need a bigger car
test drove a GTS yesterday - love the styling and the 4.8 + power kit does give it some go. but trying to decide between trading in my 997.1 C2S for the GTS or keeping the 997 and just getting a base 3.6
porsche in HK don't have a 3.6 to test drive - any advice from members here who have tried both?

I would have to disagree. I think the V6 drives great. Especially compared to the other V6 comparables.
Keep your 997 and get the base. A Cayenne will never substitute a 911. And i'm sure the wife would be happy with a base V6.

if you like the V8 exhaust sound and if you occasionally go full throttle go for GTS!!
i think a v6 with 20inch wheels can be a nice daily car too!
i have a cayenne s.. and ive also driven the diesel! but not v6
and diesel was real nice to drive!!
but i guess its always best to test drive the car you want to buy!!

I agree with this.
We bought the diesel and love it but it's no GTS or Turbo for sure. But it has the power in the range that we drive in and great MPG as a bonus. While we had it in for service we were given the V6 gaser, less motor power was not the big issue but hunting for the correct gear nearly drove me crazy. The Cayenne is heavy and it seems the transmission plays too large of a role in moving the beast with the V6 gas version. I drove it for two days comparing every style of driving and all I found was the transmission upshifting and downshifting all over the place to satisfy. I know some here have the V6 so by no means do I want to insult but the diesel just pushes like nobody's business and the transmission takes a back seat for the ride, it really is the torque that makes all the difference. Of course really it is just my opinion and for the folks who are happy with their Turbo, GTS , or V6 gas versions then it just doesn't matter...does it. It is unfortunate for such a large purchase that you get so little seat time to understand what it is you are paying for. It would be great just to rent one for the weekend and say "this is the one".

I have the turbo diesel, but was given a base six cylinder as a loaner for a few days. Didn't like it. Compared to mine, it was coarse, was underpowered, downshifted too much, and was quite thirsty. Based upon that brief encounter, I'd jump on the GTS in a heartbeat. Plus the GTS has a lot of goodies that are optional on the base car.

thanks for the advice everyone
finally managed to get a 3.6 test drive (had to hop over to singapore to do so!), definitely peppier than other SUVs. but doesn't quite stir the emotions the way my 997 does and the way the GTS comes close to doing
now the other consideration is wait time - the 3.6 can be had in 4 months, but the GTS requires waiting 8-9... decisions decisions
@grohgreg - i'm not gonna lie, the goodies on the GTS are very enticing
@phorsche - you're right, brute bhp isnt important in HK but torque is

then, to state the obvious, the diesel is your car. does not make a sporty sound but has good shove at lower (i.e. legal) Speeds. S diesel if you can.
@Phorsche - unfortunately just heard that both the diesel and diesel S were not approved by the regulators in HK so they wont be an option anytime soon...
back to 3.6 petrol vs 4.8 GTS...

Absolutely. I drove a base gasoline loaner recently, and it simply didn't have the quiet power and refinement that I had become accustomed to in my diesel. Despite the price difference, I'd buy a GTS over a base gasoline model any day.
